Image Grabber II

kanji

I've been using Image Grabber II for a while. i haven't found an
alternative program which allows me to save the screenshots as
customized thumbnails. the end result is an image file that appears
like a contact sheet.

I still run WinMe. Suddenly Image Grabber II has ceased performing
with wmv files. it works fine with mpg and avi. It's a bit strange
and i have no idea how to correct that glitch.

screen capture of glitch:

Any assistance with this WMV Screencap dilemma would be most
appreciated.

the only info i have on the program or author is the following:

PART 1 -- SCREEN CAPTURES AND JOINING IMAGES by TheMeatwad

[Update December 2005: By far the quickest & easiest way to make & stitch
screenshots in one operation is the free imagegrabber2 -
http://www45.brinkster.com/antworkz/ install & use that & you'll not needto
worry about readin the rest of the info below unless you have an unsupported
clip, it does support most.]

Q: How do I do screen caps?
A: While there are many ways to do this, here are the most common.

Windows Media Player 9

If you are using Windows Media Player 9, pause the video at the scene youwish
to capture.
Press Ctrl+i (that's control key plus letter 'i'). Think of the 'i' as "image."
The "Save Captured Image" dialogue will open up. Choose the folder you wish to
save the image in -- choose the file type (either JPG or BMP) and give ita
file name (default name is "capture.") Click on "Save."
If you plan on doing any further manipulation of the saved image it's best to
save it as a BMP to retain the original quality. You can use Paint (or other
app) to save it as a JPG later (Preview pics for PureTnA should always beJPG).

You can't take a screenshot if the program is using overlays to display the
picture.
In windows media player you can disable overlays and screenshots will work, I
recommend you re-enable them afterwards.
Tools>Options>Performance Tab>Advanced -- uncheck "use overlays" if it is
checked. If that doesn't work, turn video acceleration all the way down.

Windows Media Player 10

Guess what? It's exactly the same procedure as WMP 9.

Media Player Classic

This is NOT a Microsoft product -- it's open-source (free) and works verywell
even though it looks like the old MS Windows Media Player 6.4. It's easy
enough for beginners yet has options and features for the more advanced user.
Get MPC from: http://sourceforge.net/projects/guliverkli/
On that page you will find it under the "Latest File Releases" with a
"Download" link.
To capture a screen with MPC, pause the video at the desired scene. Select
"File" and "Save Image...," choose the destination folder, select the "Save as
type:" either Bitmaps or JPG. The default file name is going to be
"snapshot20050530162937.xxx" based on the current date, etc. You can change
this to whatever you wish. As with any screen cap utility, it's always best to
save the image as a BMP to retain the original quality if you plan on doing
any alterations on the picture at a later time. Then you can save it as aJPG.
Otherwise use JPG (preview pics for PureTnA should always be JPG).

BSPlayer

BSplayer is a free Windows player that plays back all kinds of media files
(avi /mpg /asf /wmv /wav /mp3 /ogm ) and specialises in video and divx playback.
Get it here: http://www.bsplayer.org/
By pressing Shift + P, BSplayer captures at the resolution you see the movie
(what you see is what you get).
The button P captures at the movie's original resolution according to their
Web site -- but I don't see the difference myself although I've only usedit
infrequently. Whichever you choose, the image is saved in the same directory
BSPlayer resides in and uses the filename format of 'bscap000.jpg' with each
successive capture increasing the number by 1.

VLC Media Player

[Ctrl+S] to bring up your preferences, click [Video] and under "Snapshot",
choose a folder to save screenshots and save them as .jpg format. Now click
[Save] then [OK]. Now when you play the video in VLC, just click [Video] in
the menu then [Snapshot] and the screenshots will be saved in your snapshot
folder and voila!

PowerDVD
Click the camera icon.

ATI Media Player
If you have an ATI video card, you might have this.
Same as PowerDVD -- Just click the camera icon.

Other Screen Capture Utilities

IrfanView
Free for non-commercial use only.
Available at: http://www.irfanview.com/
Does a lot of stuff -- kind of like a Swiss Army Knife.

FrameShots (Formerly known as "SnatchIt")
Not free. Available at: http://www.frame-shots.com/

Q: How do I join all these pictures like I've seen on the torrent page previews?
A: Simple. Use one of the easiest pic joiners around --
The "official" Pure TnA Image Joiner
A fantastic program written by one of our members, yamahaSZR660!
More info and download link here: http://www.puretna.com/imagejoiner.php
It's very easy to use and it's free!

Kamikazee, thanks for getting me some answers. I'm going to try all of
your suggestions and see which will work best. My ImagerGrabber II
still works well with avi and mpg.
I haven't changed any codecs so the problem remains an enigma.

I like the last item you pointed out about joining the inividual shots.
Until you mentioned the program on PTNA, I thought Image Grabber II
was the only game in town for making nice contact sheets with the video
info (as you know) already embedded in the final file and on the top of
the contact sheet.

I'm part of the Pure TnA community and have relied entirely on
ImageGrabber I and ImageGrabber II. Hopefully I upgrade my 5-year old
computer before summer. I should
have much more stability at that time.
