I'm stumped on this one!!!

Here is the equip, new custom built system, with xp
pro, plus all updates. All fresh and with all device
drivers and latest updates. Includes limited 3rd party
software such as nortons, games, office. All the downloads
and updates were downloaded from the net via the built in
nic card on the motherboard. The ISP service is with
adelphia which uses dhcp.
Here is the problem: I take the PC to to another place
install a linksys usb wireless connector to get it on a
linksys router and a cable modem then another ISP which
also uses dhcp and it does not work. the wireless zero
configuration shows nothing. all is grayed out. device
manager shows a good usb wireless nic device. properties
of the wireless device are all there tcp/ip,client for
microsoft. and all set for obtain automatically. Icon in
the sys tray shows no wireless network available. The
connector itself is blinking and having a great
conversation with the ap. 3rd party utility program shows
the ssid of the ap and gives the signal quality as good.
but the first tab of the utility shows no connection with
the ap or the internet. in cmd prompt it shows the
device's mac address but says it is disconnected. won't
release what is not there.
interesting notes: each time you install and then
uninstall it adds another wireless network that is not
availabe in the sys tray only shows one icon but i am up
to wireless network 7. again everything is grayed out when
you open and look at the properties. i installed a dlink
wireless pci adapter and got the same results exactly. the
last thing i did was do a dirty install of xp using the
repair option. however this did not work either and when i
did another install of the usb connector it showed the
same results.
I am stumped on this one!!! Any ideas???

First is this a laptop or pc?
Next as I gather here your isp works on the NIC, you carry the unit to
another location and try and connect by wireless, your unit shows no
connection available is this correct? At the other location is there a unit
that is connected wireless? At the away location lets call that L2 what
equipment do they have, and has it been set to broadcast?
Do you at L1 have a wireless router? What brand is it.

Hi It's a custom built pc yes the linksys 4 port router is
set to broadcast i can see the router with the linksys
utility software the problem is with the wireless zero
configuration built into xp it lets me install the usb
connector but doesn't see it in the wireless zero app it
also loads well into the device manager with no errors???

Guys, are you using the same encryption key?
The two networks are most surely using different
credentials!

I suspect this is the same problem I'm running into

I'm running a laptop with both wireless and nic and find that once the nic has been plugged in, xp pro refuses to recognise the wireless connection as a valid gateway to the internet

The quick workaround I've found (for when I want to use the wireless around the house) is to delete both cards from device manager with the nic cable removed and the wireless enabled

Once rebooted, the laptop picks up the wireless as the only available connection to the internet and things work fine until I plug the cable back into the nic card. (In my case I need to have the wep authorisation handy, but you should be able to get it off of your friend's computer)

It ain't pretty, but it seems to work for me, although if anybody out there knows of a real fix rather than a workaround I'd be greatly appreciative

Is Internet access available through the wired NIC? If so, I don't
see what the problem is.

If not, the problem is that both network connections (wired and
wireless) have a default gateway specified. The solution is to
either:

1. Remove the default gateway specification from the wired connection.

or:

2. Assign explicit metrics to both connections, with the wireless
metric having a lower value than the wired metric.

Internet access is available through the wired connection to the router, but once I disconnect the wired connection I cannot get the wireless connection to work

It's picked up by XP, and shows as a good connection, but only shows outgoing packets not incoming

The support tab (which includes repair and tcip settings) is completely greyed out

When I attempt to "repair" the wireless connection I get a pop-up telling me that tcip is not enabled for this connection... cannot proceed

I know I'm probably missing something simple, but as I stated before the only workaround I've found which will let me switch between wired and wireless internet access from the same router is to remove the cards from device manager with the wired cable removed and allow XP to find the wireless connection as a valid gateway to the internet.

I believe I finally found a fix for the problem, and am now able to switch between wired and wireless without any problems

My wireless card was returning an internal windows IP, and some combination of ipconfig /flushdns + releases and renews seemed to do the trick.
