IF statement re Minus vs Plus

In a IF statement I want it to recognise a minus figure e.g. -45.00 as against a normal figure of 5.00. So that I can place in different columns.

I have tried some variations but cannot get it to work. The format for the columns is 'number 2 decimals' .

=IF(b4=credit,d4,c4) what do I put in place of 'credit' ?
