Iexplorer opens up to 85 clone copies viewable in the tasklist only

Hi

I have a peculiar problem. When I open internet explorer (version 7 -
32 bit) this program, sometimes, quickly becomes unstable and
impossible to work with. I realised that my tasklist was swarmed with
iexplorer tasks, and I could barely shut these tasks down before new
ones appeared. I have no apparent virus, but I have run cc cleaner to
clean up a.o. the Registry files.

My PC is a quad core, 4GB RAM, 64 bit windows vista business edition.
ALL available updates from MS have been isntalled as well as virus
protection (AVG) and windows defender has run regularly.

Unfortunately some of my banking sites cannot be accessed via Chrome
which is why need to find a lasting solution.

As the problem is not constant I am having difficulties solving this.
Iexplorer can be perfectly normal for a few days then suddenly start
to act as described.

Any ideas would be helpful -

Ouch; I see no one has responded so I'll give it a try. First, I know
nothing about 64 bit systems but that shouldn't matter in this case.

You said "internet explorer"; the browser. Is that what you meant for
sure? Just checking.

Does it make any difference whetheryour modem is on or off?

You could try reinstalling IE7, but that's sort of a long shot as the
root cause. Easy to eliminate from consideration by reinstalling it
though.

For grins, how about trying mozilla's FireFox 3 as a test to see if it
has the same problem?

Chrome is new: Try UN-installing Chrome, and see if if IE and FF work
OK? Chrome still has some bugs lurking around from what Iv'e read.

I assume 64 bit still has an Event Viewer, right? Look for errors in
Event Viewer; they could lead to a solution.
Start;
Run;
eventvwr.msc
OK
in regular 32 bit XP. Make notes of the errors and post them here.

Umm, and IE, right? Neither IE nor Chrome can access them, right?

I am sort of targeted on Chrome at the moment. I think you should
uninstall it and see if thngs work well from IE and/or say FireFox3.

I respectfully submit that you DO have a virus, worm, trojan, or some
malware on the machine. Since you don't know what it is, I would advise
you to WRITE DOWN AND REMOVE FROM THE COMPUTER, the information you need
to access your banking files, just in case it's headed that way and
hasn't gotten there yet. Replace them after the problem is fixed.
If you know how to, set your firewall to stop any access to your
banks would be just as good probably.

If the above hasn't led to anything viable, then,
In Safe Mode:

First, was AVG up to date when you scanned? What were the results of
the scan? Nothing at all found?

Then, throw your full, each updated, arsenal of spyware detectors at
your drives. Since none of them are turnkey types, it usually takes a
minimum of 3 to be sure you've caught as much as possible/reasonable.

Although the list of possibilities is a long one, here are some
suggestions:

Adaware

Spybot Search & Destroy (might warn you about Adaware; that's OK.
Continue the checks; just watch in case it does see Adaware - mine never
has).

Spyware Blaster

Windows Defender (think you said you already had this one - it's not the
best by far)

SpywareGuard

Windows Malicious Software removal tool

There are lots more, but those are decent ones. Be certain to update
each one before using it. Beware; some are spyware in and of themselves
if you just grab names willy nilly. You can find these with Google's
search engine.

It's possible, but I think unlikely, for those to find nothing. I'm
hoping, and reasonably confident that they will help the problem or
completely solve it. THEN if nothing is fixed after the above, it's
time to go back and look for other things that might cause this to
happen.

This problem where IE opens extra copies of itself is usually a sign
of some type of spyware / malware infestation. The usual fix is to do
a complete anti-virus check-up / clean and follow upd with a complete
spyware scan (with known good spyware removal tools.)

No matter how many times you re-install IE 7 (if possible,) you will
possibly not fix this prior to cleaning out the infestation.
