IEEE 1394 portable Disk Not seen

I recently added a portable disk via an IEEE 1394 port. The disk drive, a
Maxtor 160GB ATA-133 drive, is in a "ULTRA" mini disk enclosure. The
enclosure has an ON-OFF switch for its 12 volt DC power supply. Cycling from
OFF to ON causes windows XP to lose track of the disk. Rebooting the system
allows XP to again recognize the disk. XP's Computer disk management does
not recognize the drive using the rescan or refresh options. Is there a
method for forcing the system to recognize the drive, without reboot?
Thanks

Thanks for the suggestion, but that doesn't appear to work. Device manager's
failure to may be caused by the fact that my Epson C60 USB printer is always
seen a new device for which all reinstalls end in possible failure. -
Although the printer continues to work well until I reboot and it installs
yet again. Any thoughts on the printer problem?

Is the 1394 port integrated or a pci card?

Is it considered hot swappable? Can you unplug 1394 cable then plug back in
like USB flash drives?

So you have 2 problems?
Have to reload printer driver every time you boot up?
Have to tried to update driver?

I had a problem with Windows XP Pro SP2 recognizing all of the 1394 devices
that I had installed in my computer. Fortunately I had a 3 output 1394 board
installed, and connected each 1394 device to its own connector. Now all of my
3 1394 devices are recognized and work fine. In you case, it may be that it
is not working in a "Daisy Chain" type of connection.
