IE8 - Windows XP SP3

The performance of IE8 in WIndows XP SP3 is shocking. It crashes, its slow
to launch and slow at loading websites up. Why is it so bad?
The PC was running fine until now... I was running IE7 before and that was
great! Any ideas why IE8 is so bad?

Thanks a lot.

Using xp-sp3 and have no problem whatsoever after ( and before ) installing
IE8.
So...
I would try to uninstall 8 and retry install while disconnecting AV etc

IE 8 works well with SP3. You would have needed to clean up all the
"add-ons" that usually get installed in IE 7 prior to installing IE
8. Usually, it seems that "security" tool bars tend to interfere with
IE 8. Uninstall any tool bars that might be installed and uninstall
any enhanced spyware detection tools.

I guess something got messes up. Mine works just fine. Maybe you should
re-install.

HOW TO solve IE8 installation problems
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/949220

No-charge support for Internet Explorer 8 installation, set-up and usage
(only) is available via the phone based on your locale through 31 December
2009. Customers must be running Windows XP or Windows Vista in a non-domain
environment.
=> US & CA Residents: 1-866-234-6020
=> Other locales: https://support.microsoft.com/oas/default.aspx?&prid=13043

My personal recommendations include:

=> Install IE8 manually, not via Windows Update/Automatic Updates!!

=> Uninstall all third-party toolbars (e.g., Google; Yahoo; Windows Live)
and third-party Windows Themes before installing IE8.

=> Close all open applications (i.e., anything with a taskbar icon) before
installing or uninstalling IE8.

=> I would strongly recommend disabling your anti-virus application and any
anti-spyware application's "system protections" (other than Defender's)
before installing (or uninstalling) an IE upgrade. If you're running a
third-party firewall, I would recommend disabling it and then enabling the
Windows Firewall before installing (or uninstalling) an IE upgrade.

=> Create a Restore Point manually before installing IE8.

=> Reboot twice after installing or uninstalling IE8.

=> For best chance of success with IE8, make certain that your anti-virus
application, any anti-spyware applications (other than Defender), and your
third-party firewall (if any) are supported in IE8 Final before you decide
install it.

I have IE8 running on three machines here: one running XP SP3 and two
running Vista SP1. On all three of my machines, I have none of the
problems you relate and IE8's performance is fine.

I don't know what's causing *your* problems (but infection by malware
is always a strong suspect), but your problems are not that "IE8 is so
bad."

Thanks a lot for the responses. It seems the problem must be here then. I
have since removed the offending IE8, by restoring a previous backup taken
before I installed it. Not sure what the problem is with IE8 on this
computer, but it sure does cause problems.

Thanks again........

Agreed. It is not every PC that acts this way with IE8.
I run a computer repair store and get to see many PC's.
Some run great with IE8.
Others require uninstalling back to IE7.
PC stats seem to not matter.
Some duo-cores crawl with IE8.
Some P-4's go fast.
Taskmgr.exe shows 1% usage, 10% ram used, the PC just sits there for a long
time, then jumps up and responds.

Wonder what's up.
