IE6 SP2 Warning Page Has Expired

Previous advice in this forum for when "Warning: Page has expired" comes up,
is to disable "do not save encrypted pages." OURS IS ALREADY DISABLED. This
is a home computer. We have the latest IE6 SP2 for Windows XP. But since we
downloaded the service pack, every time we're in our BellSouth WebMail and
try maneuver around in there, we'll get "Warning: Page has expired," and it
completely goofs up the rhythm of what we're doing, and sometimes even losing
stuff. Hitting the back button or refresh will not return us to where we
were. WHAT IS THE SETTING to fix this? Or would switching to Outlook
Express as our mail take care of it? We don't want to switch, but will if we
have to. We are awaiting a response from BellSouth about this problem. But
if there's a simple IE setting we've got checked that we shouldn't, I sure
would like to know!!! Thank you. Gigi.

Hi Gigi :)

Try the following and see if it helps:

Error Message: Warning: Page Has Expired: The Page You Requested...

also...

Safely Delete the Temporary Internet Files

If these steps do not resolve your problem, or you need help with the above,
please post back to this thread with the details and any error messages.

Hope this helps

Appreciate your reply, Jan.
No, the things you suggested do not work. I had already mentioned disabling
the script thing, and I empty my temp files regularly. We did not have this
problem until we upgraded to SP2. Gigi

Hi Gigi :)

As you do not mention what other steps you may have taken in
troubleshooting, try the following and see if they will help. Ignore any
that you may have already done:

Disable your 'auto-detect' settings on your browser. For Internet Explorer
users, click the IE Tools menu, click Internet Options, click the
Connections tab, click the LAN Settings button, and then clear the
'Automatically Detect Settings' box.

Check to be sure your Proxy server setting is unchecked if you don't need to
use a Proxy.

Several of these are known to cause problems:
1) Zone Alarm Pro [Private Header Info - enabled?]

"Mobile Code Control" = Off

2) Symantec (ISS\NIS)[Enable Browser Privacy - enabled]

Solution: Completely remove and reinstall NIS.

5) Cookie blocking software that are blocking "required" Cookies.

6) Pop-up blockers that are stripping header\url info.

7) WebWasher Standard Filter/URL Filter

8) If you have Norton anything, disable it and see if it helps.

8) Make sure the following registry entry is not corrupt:
[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet

"User Agent"="Mozilla/4.0 (compatible; MSIE 6.0; Win32)"

Try changing your procedure?

Often you can open a link in a new window.
Then instead of using the Back button to return to the first page
just close the second window. Doing that has the additional advantage
that often you won't even lose your place on the previous page.

Thanks, Jan. You are a wiz! I have just tried two things on your list, so
we'll see if that works. If it does, I'll post back and let you know if they
fixed it. The two things I tried: I just now under Tools/Options "checked"
under "Advanced" the box that says "Allow active content to run files on my
computer." I also just now reduced the pop-up filter to "low" instead of
"medium." We are using the firewall that Windows provides us with the XP, as
it seems to work better than our System Suite used to. Thanks. Until later,
Gigi.

Robert, I appreciate your response, but the crux of the problem is we don't
want "page expired" to come up AT ALL. So I tried some of the above post's
suggestions and will see if that works. Also, I will try your suggestions in
the interim. Gigi

UPDATE: Jan, I believe I have solved the problem. As I said, I did what you
suggested, which, by the way, did not work. But your tips gave me some
ideas. I also UNchecked (options/tools/advanced) "warn if FORMS for ms sub
not being re" becuz the "warning page expired" note said something about
forms, AND I also returned my security and privacy settings to the "Default"
levels (options/tools/privacy and security). THAT worked. Now, which one of
those two it is, I don't know. But that's an easy enuff fix for all those
poor souls out there going thru what I've been going thru. If Windows is
reading this, they need to test and then put that fix into their knowledge
base...in fact, there's a lot of standard tips they need to put in text form
to GO WITH the SP2 package. Thanks again, Jan. Gigi

Hi Gigi :)

As an additional note.....you should also be aware that webmasters can, and
many do, set up their website coding to prevent use of the back button,
which will create the Page has Expired situation, and there is nothing you
can do to correct or prevent this in IE. Once you are sure you have covered
all avenues on your end to be sure it is not IE related, you can send a
message to the webmaster and ask them to check or remove that part of their
coding. It is a widely used practice by many webmasters, but,
unfortunately, there seems to be no web policy to prevent this type of
entrapment, so to speak, other than peer pressure that it is not good form.
Sometimes, it is just that they have not kept up with the changes in XP or
SP2 that may affect how those users can access or view their website. It's
just another aspect of the problem many are not aware of. :)
