IE6 SP2 doesn't display some images

David

With IE6 SP2 running on WIN XP Home Edition, certain Web
images don't display in any way (no images, no placeholder
boxes). Example: on this page

http://www.apogeeadventures.com/index.htm

there should be a row of 4 photos between the header
graphic and the text "Welcome to Apogee!". These are
visible in most systems, but not in some running IE6 SP2.
Is this a bug in an early release of SP2 or ??

Thank you.

Not absolutely. I can see them fine. XPsp2 RC1 (Build 2096.)

Have you tried changing your display properties? E.g. different
resolution?

Do you see the other images for your page?
E.g. top4.jpg and acroglobal.gif?

Are the missing ones listed in the Privacy Report? (Alt-V,v)
Can you display missing ones in their own window?
(Use the Privacy Report's Summary button if you are unsure of the path.
Unfortunately there is no way to capture the URL that way. If you want
to do that you could try using the TIF viewer instead. Alt-T,O,Alt-S,V)

The images are cacheable so it would be interesting to know
also if you can display them separately while offline (Alt-F,W)
before trying to access them separately from the Internet
(assuming that the site allows that.)

Do you see all the placeholders if you you toggle off Show Pictures?
(Options, Advanced tab, Multimedia section)

We are not the ones having this problem, so I can't vouch for these results.
But here's what the user with the problem reports:

1. Changing display properties has no effect.
2. All other images on the page are visible.
3. The missing images are not listed in the Privacy Report.
4. Yes, he sees placeholder boxes when SHOW PICTURES is toggled off.

I also asked him if when he views the source code of the page he is able
to find "bikerback.jpg" which is the filename of the leftmost photo.
He says he searched for it and it's not there. That's an unexpected result,
and I don't trust it 100%. It seems consistent with the image files not being
in the privacy report, but not with his being able to see placeholders with
images off. Earlier we tried renaming the image files with short file names,
and it didn't help.

I tend to think there's a bug in the release of IE6 he's using. We've gotten
input from 12 other users of IE6 SP2; 9 of them see the images but 3
don't, so the problem isn't unique to this one user. Can you suggest any
other explanation?

David,

Please continue posting in the thread. Others may have better ideas
for you than mine.
3. The missing images are not listed in the Privacy Report.

Ask what precisely is showing in the Privacy Report.
If this was done when Show Pictures was off you would only see
the HTML page listed there.

4. Yes, he sees placeholder boxes when SHOW PICTURES is toggled off.

Did he explicitly say that he can see the placeholder boxes that you are
assuming he should see? This statement could be made about the
images that he already sees without any reference to the ones that he
isn't seeing.

Can he see the pictures then with right-click Show Picture?
Also, when Show Pictures is on has he assumed that the pictures were
there and tried to do anything with them, e.g. using the right-click menu?
I'm also wondering what effect a different BGCOLOR= might have
with this diagnosis.

Re: missing source code.
Ask for the result from javascript:document.fileSize
for both cases. The only explanation I can think of for not having source
but having placeholders is that the source is changing for each case.
If it is changing perhaps a varying size would indicate that.
If the source is changing it would have to be due to some kind of
third-party privacy program which would be intercepting the datastream
and actually modifying it before IE sees it. I'd be surprised though if
its actions could be dependent on the state of the Show Pictures option.

Find out if there is any commonality among the 3 with video drivers.
Make them check and not assume that they know what they are using.
I just remembered that I had to reinstall my video drivers after installing
XPsp2, though it was not for this reason.

You might have better luck reposting in a newsgroup which specializes
in the XPsp2 beta. Here is a link to that web portal:
