Hi all,
I have IE6 SP1 with Q330994, Q822925 and Q824145 running on XP Home (fully
patched with the critical updates from Windows Update). Until recently
everything's been fine but earlier this week IE started acting strangely -
basically, any link that does a window.open() on any page (from my own tests
to large corporate web sites) raises two problems.
Firstly, I get a blank page in the newly created window
Second, I get a script error box with "A disk error occoured during a read
operation"
Also, right-clicking on a link and choosing "Open in new window" gives me a
blank window. No script error though.
I've done some poking about and followed various advice from here:
http://www.mvps.org/inetexplorer/answers2.htm
to no avail.
Ideally I'd like to try and reinstall IE, just in case its a registry thing
that's gone awry, but all attempts fail:
- ie6setup.exe tells me it's already installed
- if I do ie6setup /c:"ie6wzd.exe /d /s:"c:\path\to\ie6setup.exe"""
(as I've read elsewhere via Google), I get so far through
the setup to the point where it tries to download various
bits of IE, at which point I get the error message:
"Setup was unable to download the required components.
Please make sure you are connected to the Internet,
or try to run setup again later.".
I know I've got an internet connection, it's up, it's running.
I'm typing commands on a remote machine so I know it's not
gone down.
I do /have/ a local copy of all the setup files, but I can't figure out how
to point ie6wzd to it - it always seems to want to download files from
interweb.
Nothing has changed or been installed for a good month or two now. I've
disabled the Google toolbar (by unticking Tools -> Internet options ->
Advanced -> Enable third party browse extensions). Is there anything else I
can try? Or any
Regards,
Chris...
