I spent a couple of hours on a friends xp pro PC uninstalling and
reinstalling Norton Firewall and Systemworks (inc. a/v)
....all was well until I started fiddling with his DUN's and for all was okay
for some time after that, and then just as I was about to leave, his IE6
sodding well started chucking up
"Page not found" (not a 404), and the taskbar button for IE6 shows server
not found , or "unable to locate server" or something like that.
I made a new dial up network connection and still no go, his IE6 flatly
refuses to surf. Getting connected to his ISP is no problem at all but, his
browser can no longer 'locate the server.'
Any clues on how to fix would be humungously appreciated.
Would the fixes on http://www.theeldergeek.com/repair_ie6.htm be of any use
d'you think ?
Ages ago, with IE5 and 5.5 I got the same problem once in a blue moon, and
even going to W98se's add/remove and threatening to uninstall IE in order to
access that little box with two or three radio buttons on it, one of which
was "repair internet explorer," wouldn't even fix it.
Just what is happening when something seems to snap, fail, or get corrupted
then, and which then causes this "Page not found / unable to locate server,
fault ???
regards, Richard
