IE6 freezes when opening

When I click on the E icon, IE tries to open. Only about
80% of the window opens. The curser arrow is replaced
with the hour glass and does not go away. I cannot close
IE. Using Task Manager will "End Task" but the IE window
does not close down. Then I also cannot close down the
Task Manager window. Finally I have to start another Task
Manager and Shut Down to restart. Then I may be able to
get IE to start normally and then again maybe not. Can
anyone tell me what is going on?
