IE6 calls 127.0.0.1, "cannot find website"

T

the sniffer,..

Hi, someone worked on my mom's computer and now when you click on any
site from the IE6 Favorites it calls local host and posts, "cannot
find website" or some such 404 type message. The only site that
connects is her health insurance company site. If you type in a
www.whatever.com address it does the same thing too.
Afterwards the hour glass mouse icon is displayed in the upper part of
IE6. It reverts to the arrow in the window where you would normally
see web content.
This is a low end Dell machine with xp pro, SP2 pre installed. The
windows firewall is turned off and it's running AVG virus protection
as it's only loaded program. I tried restoring to default under the
IE6 Tools/Options/Security tab.
I updated AVG and Ad-aware, checked for viruses but no problems.
There's nothing obviously weird running in Task Manager.
The machine shipped with 128M memory and was so slow I added another
256M, enabled Classic View, and "adjust for best performance" but
that's all I really changed. We're using 800x600 screen resolution
because it's easier for her to read.
That's all I know, please send help.
