IE6 and OE don't work after upgrade

J

John Noble

WinNT 4.0 server sp6a. I upgraded from IE4.0 to IE6 sp1. IE will launch
but won't display any pages (any URL). OE will attempt to Launch but then
generates an application error (Dr. Watson - msimn.exe).

The first time I attempted the upgrade, the install had errors regarding
comcat.dll - I uninstalled IE6 then renamed comcat.dll per KB article and
re-installed and the installation completed fine.

Any suggestions? Should I have upgraded to IE5.0 or 5.5 first before
attempting upgrade to 6.0?

Thanks,
John Noble

Did you upgrade to IE6 SP1 via Windows Update?

To assure a clean install, your anti-virus application should be disabled
and all other running processes closed before installing anything, including
Windows Updates.

Thanks for the reply. I've jsut attempted another re-install. I stopped the
anti-virus and any other services that weren't necessary. I've run SB S&D
and AdAware (although this is a server that does not receive mail and rarely
get's out onto the internet). Once again, the install seems to proceed fine
(no errors). Upon reboot, I can launch IE and the app loads but there is
nothing but a white background and hour glass. No URL will load. I've
confirmed internet access by connecting to and ftp site via command prompt.

I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling 4 times now. I've tried both full
install and minimal. I can uninstall back to 4.0 every time and IE then
works fine.

Also, if I attempt to change any IE (IE 6) settings via Internet Options,
the application freezes and I have to End Task it to close.

I need to have IE 5.5 or higher for an application that I am going to
install. All help appreciated.

One other thing I forogt to mention: The application Event Log lists and
event ID 1000 for IE everytime I launch it after upgrading to IE 6. Here's
the message:
The description for Event ID (1000) in Source (Microsoft Internet Explorer)
could not be found. It contains the following insertion string(s):

It's sounding more and more like a hijwackware problem, John.

Dealing with Trojans & Hijackware

A. Removing Trojans and Trojanware with Sysclean

Create a new folder named Sysclean (e.g., C:\Program files\Sysclean or just
a desktop folder). Download 'Sysclean.com' from
http://www.trendmicro.com/download/dcs.asp to this folder. Download the
latest 'Trend Pattern File' zip (e.g., lpt123.zip) from
http://www.trendmicro.com/download/pattern.asp and extract its contents to
the same folder; see the Readme text file for instructions.

Delete Temporary Internet Files (IE Tools>Internet Options>General)
accepting the option to delete all offline content. Reboot and delete
contents of TEMP folders and Recycle Bin.

Close all running programs including your anti-virus application, go
offline, and run Sysclean. For best results, do nothing with the machine
until the scan completes.

If the scan shows any infections in System Restore files:

(1) create a new Restore Point (Start>Programs>Accessories>System
Tools>System Restore), then

(2) delete all but the most recent Restore Point
(Start>Programs>Accessories>System Tools>Disk Cleanup>More options [tab]).

Afterwards, update your own anti-virus application and perform another full
system scan.

1. CWShredder v2.0 (no updates available currently; choose Fix, not Scan)

2. Ad-Aware SE (Reconfigure per http://aumha.org/forum/viewtopic.php?t=5877;

3. Spybot (RTFM; Immunize first and then scan; Generally, fix everything in

Important: You must seek updates for Ad-Aware, Spybot, etc., before each and
every use, even "right out of the box". But even they can't catch
everything, 24/7.

Thanks again.
I've done all steps in part A of your last reply.
Deleted Temp internet files
Emptied Recycle Bin
Deleted all files in Temp folder
Ran Sysclean with AV stopped, no other programs/services running & server
disconnected from LAN. Sysclean reported no problems or errors
I updated AV (Sophos AV) with latest patch (ide) files and ran complete scan
(all files) of each hard drive - 0 viruses found.

So I'm on to step B.
Correct me if I am wrong, but I am under the impression WinNT4.0 is not a
supported OS for CWShredder.
I will update Spybot SD & Adaware with todays patches and run again but they
turned up minimal results yesterday.

I'm starting to think this may not be a hijack related issue but I could be
wrong. Please advise on CWShredder - Intermute's site does not indicate if
WinNT is supported (Actually, I found text that says SpySubtract is only
supported for Win98se, WinME, Win2k & WinXP - I can't find a supported
platform list for CWShredder specifically). Anyway, I've tried launching
CWShredder by double-clicking in explorer and I receive and 'Entry Point Not
Found' error with this text "The procedure entry point Module32First could
not be located in the dynamic link library KERNEL32.dll"

Can we assume that WDU was not installed with IE4.0?
(If not you might have to reinstall it from the IE6 site.)
If you're not sure you can tell by checking the version of your explorer.exe (e.g. at the DLL Database.)

Have you tried an IE Repair? (Ref. KB194177)

Also please clarify what version of IE you have now.
Your answer to PA Bear's suggestion to use WU seemed
open to at least two interpretations as to whether you have
installed the latest cumulative update. Note that provided
you have another computer (or another partition) to work with
that you could download the latest cumulative security update
for IE and install it manually, bypassing WU and your problems
with your IE.

OE will attempt to Launch but then
generates an application error (Dr. Watson - msimn.exe).

Details? Use drwtsn32.log and find the Stack Back Trace
of the crashing task. (E.g. find up from the bottom FAULT ->

FWIW here is how to reinstall from IE6setup if you need to.
This was in reply to somebody who was crashing in browseui.dll

<extract>
For NT4sp6a I fixed a problem like that by installing
the latest update to Windows Desktop Update component
(aka WDU, aka Active Desktop but the most significant part
of it for me is its Shell Enhancements).

The command was:

ie6setup.exe /c:"ie6wzd /E:IE4Shell_NTx86"

That had the effect of installing the latest version of the WDU
component, as if I had had IE4.01sp2 to install and then upgrade
from. (The normally seen method of doing this update is to
uninstall IE6, install IE4.01sp2 with WDU and then reinstall IE6.)
explorer.exe (e.g. at the DLL Database.)

Many moons ago I used to participate in the windowsnt newsgroups.
I am almost certain that I have seen that crash before but my memory
is not as sharp as it once was.

Did you by any chance change any hardware *after* you upgraded
your service pack? I seem to recall a ROT that says reinstall your

Aha. ;)

BTW I use the Canadian server only because I'm not sure how much

That might be another good reason to try reinstalling the service pack.
