DNS: lab2.edu
Machine name: Authsrv (Domain Controller)
Machine name: Multisrv (Member Server running IIS)
I am using W2K with SP4.

When I type address "lab2.edu" in IE address bar, its
shows following message:

The requested URL could not be retrieved.
While trying to retrieve the URL: http://www.lab2.edu/

The following error was encountered:

Unable to determine IP address from host name for
www.lab2.edu
The dnsserver returned:

Name Error: The domain name does not exist.
This means that:

The cache was not able to resolve the hostname presented
in the URL.
Check if the address is correct.
Your cache administrator is (e-mail address removed).

When I remove Proxy Server address from LAN Setting in IE,
its works.
When I type address "multisrv" in IE address bar
with/without use of Proxy address, its OK.
I am using Proxy (Squid) on Red Hat Linux 9.
I want to use DNS entry in IE with use of Proxy (Squid).
Can you help me?

In IE properties, Connections tab, LAN settings, use your Proxy, but check
the box on the bottom that says to Bypass Proxy for Local Addresses.

Ok, let's revisit this, since "Bypass Proxy for Local..." doesn't work....
See inline below...

When I type address "lab2.edu" in IE address bar, its
shows following message:

The requested URL could not be retrieved.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
This is happening probably because the IP address associated wiht lab2.edu
is your domain controller.Each DC registersitself with it's IP. It shows up
in DNS under your zone as:
(same as parent) Host DomainControllerIpAddress
This address is called the LdapIpAddress and is used for DFS and GPOs in
your domain. Matter of fact, when the GetGpoList function runs on a client
machine, it queries:
\\lab2.edu\sysvol\ploicies\lab2.edu\{policyGuidNumber}
So if the web server is on another server, say your Mutlisrv member server,
it will not be able to find it.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

While trying to retrieve the URL: http://www.lab2.edu/

The following error was encountered:

Unable to determine IP address from host name for
www.lab2.edu
The dnsserver returned:

Name Error: The domain name does not exist.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
In your DNS server, under your lab2.edu zone name, did you create a record
called 'www' with the IP address of the web server?
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

This means that:

The cache was not able to resolve the hostname presented
in the URL.
Check if the address is correct.
<snip>

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
This could also be happening because if the Proxy server maybe using some
outside DNS server for resolution and not your internal DNS server with your
required www records, etc, so then it's asking the wrong DNS server address
for that information.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

When I remove Proxy Server address from LAN Setting in IE,
its works.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
This kind of proves what I said in the previous statement above.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

When I type address "multisrv" in IE address bar
with/without use of Proxy address, its OK.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
So that tells me one of 2 things, that you either have a hostheader called
"multisrv" in the website properties in IIS or it's the default website in
IIS on the machine called multisrv.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

I am using Proxy (Squid) on Red Hat Linux 9.
I want to use DNS entry in IE with use of Proxy (Squid).

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Doesn't matter what type of proxy you're using. They are all the same, a
proxy is a proxy. Like I said eearlier, maybe it depends on what DNS the
Proxy is using.
