IE shortcuts don't open

I have IE6 on an XP machine. Suddenly I can't open IE shortcuts. I'm used to
opening from my desktop or from folders. Neither double-click or
r-click/open work. Nothing apparently happens.

I can open from Quicklaunch or the shortcut in my start menu. Then I can
open a desktop shortcut by r-clicking the shortcut and copying and pasting
the url from the properties to the already open IE. I've created new
shortcuts; they don't open either.

I've opened the task manager and watched it as I try to open something from
the desktop. Something happens cause the CPU usage jumps up to 40% or so
each time I try to open something.

any help would be much appreciated.

From http://www.fjsmjs.com/OE/nolinks.htm

Open Windows Explorer.
Go to Tools | Folder Options | File Types.
Scroll down to URL:HyperText Transfer Protocol and select it.
Click Edit or Advanced, depending on your Windows version.
Select 'open'.
Click Edit.

"Application used to perform this action" should read:

"C:\PROGRAM FILES\INTERNET EXPLORER\iexplore.exe" -nohome
(Check the path to iexplore.exe to make sure that is correct and use the
double quotes.)

DDE should be checked and in the boxes below it you should have:

#1:
"%1",,-1,0,,,,
#2
IExplore
#3 (blank)

#4
WWW_OpenURL

URL:HyperText Transfer Protocol with Privacy should be the same.

Sometimes it is necessary to uncheck Use DDE.

If that doesn't fix it, go to Start | Run and type

regsvr32 urlmon.dll

thanks. I did the changes in Explorer and they seem to do the trick. I had
the right text in the four boxes. I unchecked "Use DDE" and it worked. Then
I went back into those menus and I see that "Use DDE" is re-checked and the
four blanks have been changed or are blank. I change those back to what you
suggest (and what was there originally) and IE doesn't open again. I go back
again and uncheck "UseDDE" again and it works again.

I'll ss how this works over the next few days. I forgot to mention something
initially; if I reboot, the shortcuts work. Then after a few days of work,
they stop. I think they stop when I close IE after working with it.

thanks again;

well the solution worked for a couple of days. Then it doesn't work again. I
back into the tools/folder options and all and the setup is the same as it
was TOW days ago when I fixed it by your suggestion. Something is making it
revert to that setting.

Any ideas?
