IE problem (spurious file download popup)

This happens with IE 7 beta also.

Recently, I have starting having problems going to various URL's. Instead
of opening the page, I get a popup asking if I want to download a file. For
example, if I try to navigate to www.craigslist.com, I get a popup asking if
I want to download the file "sfbay.craigslist[1]". (The string
sfbay.craigslist appears in the page that should be loaded, as <a
href="http://sfbay.craigslist.org/">sfo</a><br>.) This is only an example.
Other sites fail also. Once rather than the popup, I just got a screen full
of unprintable garbage.

I have disabled all plugins, and I installed IE 7. The problem remains.\

Everything works fine with Mozilla Firefox.

I am at a loss for how to proceed. Help?

Thanks,
Jive

PPS from the original poster.

More evidence. I went to the options/advanced thing and reset everything to
factory defaults. I can now visit www.studioproduct.com.

However, when I go to www.craigslist.com, it redirects me to
www.craigslist.org, which comes up as an empty page. Interestingly, when I
"view source" the notepad shows the filename as sfbay.craigslist[1], which is
the same thing that the download dialog was asking about before.

I sure hope someone can help on this. I would like to just obliterate
everything that could possibly be causing it and start over.

This is a problem I have with IE 6. I only installed IE 7 because I
couldn't figure out how to un-install and reinstall IE 6.

You said, "Posting similar threads with basically the same subject matter

This is the only thread I've ever posted here, ever. I don't know what an
MVP is. Do you work for Microsoft?

See the Release Notes for uninstalling IE73 Beta (or) whatever you
have running.

I said this simply due due to the fact that IE7 Beta, is *not* supported
in this newsgroup. Meaning, post your queries here;

That could mean that the HTTP content type header was corrupted.

There is an option you can use to overlook that and consider only
the extension of the file being downloaded. E.g. Disable:
Open files based on content, not file extension
(in Security settings, Custom Level...)

For example, if I try to navigate to www.craigslist.com, I get a popup
asking if I want to download the file "sfbay.craigslist[1]". (The string
sfbay.craigslist appears in the page that should be loaded, as <a
href="http://sfbay.craigslist.org/">sfo</a><br>.) This is only an example.

Another symptom of the raw HTTP data being corrupted.

FYI Zone Alarm Pro was once thought to be a cause of this.

I have disabled all plugins, and I installed IE 7. The problem remains.\

If you have a third-party firewall try disabling it.
Leave the Windows firewall active, however.

Everything works fine with Mozilla Firefox.

I am at a loss for how to proceed. Help?

In order to see the raw HTTP try using FiddlerTool
or capture all TCP/IP packets with netcap and format the
HTTP data in its .cap file with Ethereal.

Thanks,
Jive

Good luck
