IE Opens, Then Quickly Closes

C

Chris

Every time I click on the IE icon (doesn't matter
where ... desktop, taskbar or in the menu area), it opens
the IE window for a fraction of a second, then closes it.
I recently installed Norton Internet Suite and did a
complete scan, and it found two viruses. It deleted one
it said was a Trojan Horse, but only quarantined the
other (didn't have a name for it). I have run Ad-Aware SE
and the spyware that comes with AOL several times, to no
avail. I downloaded HijackThis to my desktop, but I can't
open it to use it! Same thing ... click on the icon, and
it starts to open for a fraction of a second, then
closes. Help!

Hi,

This is usually caused by third party browser objects.
To restore functionality, try the following steps:

Open the Control Panel.

Click on Internet Options.

Click on the Advanced tab.

Under the Browsing header, search for:
Enable third-party browser extentions (requires
restart).

**Uncheck** this box to disable BHO's.

Restart Internet Explorer.

This is only a temporary solution - you will want to remove
the root cause of the problem, and that is best suited to a
free third party program called BHOCop. BHOCop is available
here:

http://support.honour.ca/bin/bhocop.zip

Unzip this file, and install the program. Once
installed, remove all unfamiliar objects listed (unless you
are familiar with the product name, you may find it a good
idea to delete it).

Next, you may consider a full sweep of your computer to
remove other programs which may be associated with that BHO.

AdAware, available here:

http://www.lavasoftusa.com/support/download/

After downloading and installing AdAware, *be sure to update
it*. This will ensure you are protected against the latest
threats. Then, run it.

You should also consider CWShredder - this program catches
varients which may be missed by AdAware. It's also available
freely from:

http://www.spywareinfo.com/~merijn/files/cwshredder.zip

Once again, be sure to update it to ensure the latest threat
protection.

After following the above instructions, purging any
malicious programs in the process, you may want to consider
enabling third party browser extentions if you use them.
Examples of good BHO's include the googlebar and MSN
toolbar.

Hi Altrus,

I can't open Control Panel. It also does the same
thing ... I click on it, it looks like it just starts to
open then closes right away. I also downloaded BHOCOP to
my desktop, and again same thing. I click on it, and it
won't open. Whatever I've got, it won't let me open
anything that might threaten it. Any other ideas?

Try booting in safe mode and scan from there.
