IE only displays pages using HTTPS prefix

A

I have a computer that won't load any page unless the server is
accessible through a secure (https) connection. Whenever I open the
browser and the homepage is trying to load, nothing is ever displayed
in the status bar (no connecting to ... or anything), and the IE globe
just spins and spins. Firefox doesn't have this issue. All pages load
fine in Firefox. I have used the TCPView utility
(http://www.sysinternals.com/Utilities/TcpView.html) to try to monitor
IE activity. IE only shows TCP activity when accessing a page with the
https prefix. Whenever http is used, no activity is shown, now
connection is established over port 80 or anything. It is as if, IE
never attempts to make the connection to the server at all. Any
suggestions or comments would be appreciated.

Thanks.

Hi,
First check the (extensions) registry values listed at
http://inetexplorer.mvps.org/archive/answers_8.htm#extension

Next... This might be a malware problem. You should download, update and run
Ad-aware, Spybot and (if running WinXP) MS Anti-Spyware (Beta.)

I am having the same problem as Ashley. I have tried your suggestions,
but I'm still having problems. My extensions in the registry checked
out OK, and I have run MS AntiSpyware, Spybot, and Ad-Aware, and none of
them have found anything.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you,

Don

I managed to find the answer in another thread. The problem was a
program called FreshDownload. I have used this program from years
without any problem at all, but for some reason, it chunked up IE. I
un-installed it, and now everything works just fine.

Thank you for the help,

Don
