IE not responding

My copy of Internet explorer is doing nothing. When it opens up IE just
sits there waiting for the page to download but nothing happens. If I
type an address then it still sits there and still nothing happens.

The problem also comes up in anything that uses the IE webcontrol,
again they do nothing (not crash just do nothing).

The problem first came up on one of my machines whilst running IE6. I
tried all sort of things to resolve it and nothing worked (even tried
IE7).

However, after a month or so of it on that first machine it is now on
my second machine. This second machine has been running IE7 with no
problem for a couple of months and then all of a sudden it goes wrong.
I have also tried rolling my second machine back to IE6 but that
doesn't solve the problem.

I do though have internet access (via firefox / thunderbird...) and
everything else is okay.

Solutions I have tried:
- Virus and spyware check on both machines using difference packages.
It was clear
- Can't do a system restore because for some reason the restore only
offers two days of restore points and doesn't go back far enough.
- I have registered the DLLs (as suggested in an MSKB article).
However, MSHTML.dll refused to register saying "mshtl.dll was loaded,
but the DLLRegisterServer entry point was not found".

Anybody got any ideas?

Hi Yell,
Open your IE properties and Click on Programs Tab, Click the Button Labled
Manage Add-Ons and on the window open Try to Disable both Firefox and
Thunderbird Add-Ons and click OK, on the same Window (Programs Tab) Click
Reset Web Settings and Be sure the Optoin/Square Box labled:
[ ] IE should check if it the Default Browser is Selected
Clear your caches and delete Files and cookies, Click Apply/OK and Turn OFF
your computer.
Reboot/Turn ON and see if you could access websites through IE.
If no joy, Open the Command RUN and type the Following:
Iexplore /rereg click OK, when finish open the RUN command again and type
CMD click Ok and on the Prompt command C:\>netsh winssock reset Hit Enter
Type Exit and Reboot your computer and see if that helps to cure the issue.
If all in any case work try to Enable Firefox and Thunderbird on the
Prograns Tab/Manage Add-Ons the same as you Disable them.
Hope this helps

Thanks for help. I managed to get into IE properties via the control
panel (wasn't working in IE itself) and under the Manage Add-Ons were
entries for FreshDownload. This is something I installed at the weekend
on one machine and a couple on months ago on the other. Disabled that
and then uninstalled FreshDownload. It now all works perfectly.

Thanks for the help.

I got the exact same setup and the suggested fix, which consisted of
removing FreshDownload, also worked for me.

Note that even with FreshDownload installed, I had no problem with https
connection.

Thanks to all,
