IE no longer works!

My Internet Explorer 6 no longer works. When I open it, it
simply says "IE has encountered a problem and needs to
close, sorry for the inconvenience" I've tried every update
patch, I've uninstalled, reinstalled. Nothing will get it
to work. I even went back to IE 5.5 and it won't work.

I'm on Windows 2000.

It hasn't worked for months. I've been using Netscape and
updating my website with Frontpage 03 with no issues.

All of a sudden FrontPage tells me that Internet Explorer
is set to view pages offline and until I fix it I can't
publish. But since I can't even open Internet Explorer or
fix it I'm F'ing S.O.L. if you know what I mean.

Any clues?

Thanks,
BB

This is probably being caused by third party programs- malware/parasites.

From Control Panel> Internet Options> Advanced> uncheck "Enable third party
browser extensions." That should allow IE to work.

You might also be able to browse and download programs from the address bar
of Windows Explorer.

Download and run Run CWShredder from
http://www.spywareinfo.com/~merijn/downloads.html
CWShredder is only about 125 KB so it could be downloaded from another
machine onto a floppy disk if necessary.

Then download, install, *update* and run both of these programs:
Ad-aware from http://www.lavasoft.de/software/adaware/
Spybot from http://security.kolla.de/ (Remove items listed in red-others are
optional.)
Both programs should be updated after installation- before use.

Dealing with Unwanted Spyware and Parasites:

You should re-enable browser extensions after the cleanup.
