Mine is doing the same -- XP SP-2 4/12/06 updates. I'm running a wireless
broadband router w/DSL and I suspect through trial and error it may have to
do with the Windows Firewall -- some compatibility issues. When I turn off
the Win Firewall everything seems to work fine. I'm trying to find out if
there is a Firewall installed with the router (seem to remember so).
Without details of the crashes (precise symptoms and error messages) we
certainly cannot recommend a reliable fix.
BTW, reinstalling IE will rarely fix problems.
