IE is lasting each time I'm filling in a form field...

Eric Voisard

Hi,

Each time I enter some value into a form field (such as on
the web interface for this forum), IE lasts a long time
(seconds), the window being frozen, until the value is
accepted (the form updated) and I can fill in another
field.
I don't know what IE is doing during this time, but it's
really boring.

I've applied all the latest updates: SP1, Q837009,
Q832894, Q831167.
IIRC, this problem appeared when I upgraded from IE 5.5 to
IE 6, or when I applied SP1.
Security profile is set to default for the internet zone,
I tried lower levels without better results. I though it
might be due to cookies (as they're often a source of
problems), but they're enabled.

Doesn't anyone have experienced this problem?
Thanks for your help, Eric

Hi,
This is almost certainly being caused by a third-party program (adware,
spyware, parasite)

First, from IE> Tools> Internet Options> General> Accessibility, is User
Style Sheet
checked? If you don't deliberately use a style sheet, note the name of the
sheet and uncheck it. You can find and delete the sheet if you wish.

The existence of a style sheet would indicate DataNotary, a CWS variant.
Download and run CWShredder from
http://www.spywareinfo.com/~merijn/downloads.html
(alternate download: http://www.zerosrealm.com/downloads.php)
If you don't find a style sheet, CWS is still a good first step.

You may have another spyware/parasite program running.
Download, install, *update* and run these two programs:
Ad-aware from http://www.lavasoft.de/software/adaware/
Spybot from http://security.kolla.de/ (Remove items listed in red- others
are optional.)

Go to tools, internet options, content, autocomplete and clear your forms
cache.

Microsoft has released a knowledgebase article about this problem:

Delayed Response When Editing Internet Explorer Forms and Outlook Express
May Take a Long Time to Start

http://support.microsoft.com/support/kb/articles/Q251/7/87.ASP

If that doesn't help, you already have advice re malware checks from Don.

Dear Sandi and Don,

Thanks for your replies and sorry about the delay of my
follow up.

Well, I carefully followed your advices. First, the MSKB
article "251787 - Delayed Response When Editing Internet
Explorer Forms" seemed most promising since the symptoms
are exactly what I'm getting.

But first, since I already had Spybot on my computer I
began by running it (again). I also installed Ad-aware and
ran it as well. They found some garbage (mostly cookies
and registry entries) and few malware dlls (inactive ones
I think). No changes.

Oh, and btw I have no personal style sheet.

I cleared the auto-complete stuff, as well as the cache,
etc. No changes.

Then I did what is written in the MSKB article #251787,
removed the registry's ProtectedStorage key, and ran
pstore -install. Unfortunately, no changes as well :-(

Anyhow, the problem seems related to pstore because I saw
a log file pstore.log full of records like the
following: "06-13-2004 12:36:02 ServiceStart error!
(rc=0)".
So, the problem might indeed be related to the Protected
Storage stuff...

Then, I ran "msconfig" to make a clean boot (unchecked
anything in "selective boot") and rebooted. Then to ensure
cleanness, I deleted all "Temporary Internet File"
and "Downloaded program files" content, and in the
Windows' "System" directory I renamed the files
pstores.exe, pstorerc.dll and pstorec.dll to .sav.
Then I made a normal reboot, to see what would happen...

I noticed that new pstore files like above got
automatically re-installed in the system directory, and
the related registry key restored.
Then I tried to direct my browser to a formular which I
know is causing the problem (ebay's search page)...
There was a noticeable improvement. The delay is much
smaller, but I can feel that this delay still exists and
that the system is losing time doing something I don't
know. Also, there is no more pstore.log file what would
mean it has no problems anymore.

Though, I'd like to know what's this Protected Storage
stuff, and what it is doing during the lapse between two
form's fields selection...
So far, the delay has passed from 20 seconds to 5, but
it's still abnormal I think...

Thanks again for having taken from your time for helping
me, Eric

Eric,

It may be worth passing this question onto a general discussion group for
your operating system, especialy considering the Pstore ServiceStart errors.
This makes it an OS issue, not a brower issue per se, and the specialists in
that sort of stuff are in the gen.discussion groups.
