Actually you can change the Internet Explorer icon on the desktop but it
does take a registry tweak. I forgot where I found this so I apologize in
advance for not providing proper credit.

Q. How do I change the Internet Explorer icon?

A. The method is as follows:

1.. Start the registry editor (regedit.exe)
2.. Move to
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{871C5380-42A0-1069-A2EA-08002B30309D}
3.. From the Edit menu, select New - Key and enter the name of
DefaultIcon and press Enter
4.. Double click Default on the right hand side and change to the
icon you require (use browse)
5.. Select OK
6.. Close the registry editor

Yes, you're quite right about the DefaultIcon subkey ... I remember it now. I just did a 'copy and paste' of the original saved post in order to reply to this thread, and didn't take the time to edit.

btw ... I just want to say thanks for all the effort you've put into that remarkable site of yours ... a herculean task ... and a treasure trove of advice, information and tweaks, and greatly appreciated by many, many people.

You go, girl !!!

I didn't mean to jump in, but was afraid the poster would back off knowing
that a subkey/value etc needed to be added. That is probably why I started
creating the edits for the users, so they wouldn't have to miss the benefit
for being leery of working in the registry.)

And thank you very much, Fred. Your kind words are "greatly appreciated"!

<LOL> Shoot, just the go girl would have been enough, Fred. That in itself
is a great acknowledgment. You wouldn't believe how many, "You da man, Case
in point, dude, Dear Sir's....." I receive.

Thanks for the warm smile, Fred.)

better solution for the non-nerds out there

hi nerds, well i've tried your tweak and i found out it was useless explanation probably cause it was just copied and pasted from another site. I know cause i found the EXACT explanation when googling for an answer.

In anycase after getting confused in the "name the defaulticon" thing and press enter (cause you can't press enter then browse damn you, you have to enter some string)

THE POINT IS, SINCE I'M A NOOB I FOUND A BETTER "EASIER" SOLUTION

delete the official icon on the desktop

THEN

make a shortcut, change the icon there and THEN.

rename to your liking (maybe the original 'internet explorer' label

throw it back out there (i.e desktop) then PRESTO

easy solution.

NO friggin tweaks.

but nice try nerds.

Easier maybe, definitely not better

Of course we can make a short cut of IE on the desktop, but you get that stupid short cut arrow box at the lower left of the IE icon which makes it look unprofessional. Unless of course you use a tool such as TweakUI and make all shortcut icons look just like regular icons. But then you won't know if any icon is a shortcut or not, which is kind of a drastic way to do things. I tried the solution and it works great. Basically, what he means is to create a new Key named "DefaultIcon" and then enter the full path and name of the desired icon as the value for the new key. I can see your confusion in the language used for the solution, but the solution itself is quite sound.

I'm trying to change the IE icon on my desktop but when I'm entering in the full location in the registry in the defaulticon value it doesn't change anything. What do i have to enter in as the value if the location of the .ico i want to use is C:\WINDOWS\Resources\Themes\Flagship\Icons\Set 2\Browser.ico

The browser.ico is the exact icon i want to use. Thanks alot!!!!
