IE drops the connection

If I attempt to connect to some websites, IE tells me that I'm offline and
must reconnect.

When I click reconnect, IE attempts to dial-up. However, I have a cable
broadband connection.

I work around this by going into outlook express and clicking send/receive
which restores the connection.
(Incidentally although OE still connects for mail, this problem also greys
out the newsgroups.)

One of the websites that does this to me is:-

http://www.primenewyorkproperty.com/new/textSearch/propertyRentals/london/200-249.htmlI've never seen this behaviour before. What's going on here?

i've noticed the same problem lately. but, i don't have a clue what it is.
when i get the dial up box, i go to the file column on the tool bar and
uncheck "work offline" (which i hadn't checked to begin with and which is not
checked when i first start IE.

Are you sure that you aren't being given the *choice* to Work Offline
or Try Again first? Perhaps you are doubleclicking on a link while
IE can't detect whether you are connected or not? This state occurs
when the user is in a Working Online state, indicating that the user
wants to connect, but because it looks as if there is no connection
IE presents the user with the choice. It is especially applicable to
dial-up users to give them the opportunity to connect manually when
they are using Never dial... as their connection method but it also
occurs for badly configured broadband users, especially those
whose link protocol is PPPoE.

When I click reconnect, IE attempts to dial-up.

Probably indicating that a request to your DNS was unsuccessful.

My guess is your DNS is the problem. Use nslookup to test
(assuming NTx) or netcap and Ethereal to do a packet capture
and analysis.

BTW this is slightly off-topic for this newsgroup.
You may get better suggestions from a newsgroup which
specializes in networking for your OS.

Good luck
