IE does not allow validation of 'Genuine Microsoft Windows'

I have IE 6.0.2900.2180.xpsp_sp2_gdr.050301-1519. I am trying to download
Windows Defender App. Here is the sequence of events...

1) Click on download URL
2) Brings this URL
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...e7-da2b-4a6a-afa4-f7f14e605a0d&displaylang=en giving an option to validate windows.
3) Clicking on validate button brings up
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...e7-da2b-4a6a-afa4-f7f14e605a0d&displaylang=en
this page. Which asks me to install plug in. But the plug in install pop-up
does not come up at all or the Information Bar does not say that there is an
Active-X waiting for install. The page has instruction as "Right-click the
Information Bar and click Install ActiveX Control in the menu" But I don't
have such message on information bar.

4) So I use another URL on the page in section called Alternate Validation
Method. THis URL is
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...e7-da2b-4a6a-afa4-f7f14e605a0d&displayLang=en Clicking this URL takes me to this page.

5) On this latest page there is a button for 'Continue' clicking it takes me
to this URL

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...=http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkID=71696

and for some reason this page cannot be displayed. I get an error saying
This Page Cannot be displayed with an error "Cannot find server or DNS Error"

Since I cannot validate Genuine windows, I am unable to install Windows
Defender and I am assuming even more sw going forward.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Hi Jon,

Thanks for the reply. It still does not work. Here is what happens...

1) for first URL you gave me, it takes me to a page which should download
Active-X controls but they don't get loaded. Not only that even the
information bar does not show 'This Site may required active-x control'
message. Thus due to lack of the information bar, which would allow me to
click on 'install active-x control' menu, I am stuck. There is something
fundamentally wrong with my browser setting.

2) for second URL , its takes me to a spot where I get a pop up to run
legitcheck.hta but when I click on Run it does not work. It then takes me to
a site for debugging and after running a diagnostics it gives me following
error

Failed - Microsoft ActiveX controls loading

Site also gives a button to 'resolve'. However, clicking this resolved
button also does not solve this problem. Site thinks that issue is fixed and
asks me to try again and trying again takes me back in the same loop.

Anymore tips.

It sounds like your security settings in IE are too high and automatic
downloads and ActiveX are being blocked. See this article for possible
help:

Windows XP Service Pack 2-based computer

Thanks Jon. I did everything you pointed me to in the new URL you gave me.
Nothing helps.

I am going to go to Control Panel and in Add/remove windows components I
will try to remove IE, reboot and re-enable to see what happens. Will let you
know.

Ok. I have completed the uninstall and re-install if IE. Nothing has changed
and I am still having the problem. I did uninstall using add/remove windows
components.

Any more tips anybody?

Click Tools | Internet Options | Programs | Reset Web Settings and try
again.
