IE cumulative update results in WinXP crash at logoff or shutdown

Following the installation of a critical update (the MS04-038 cumulative
Security Update for Internet Explorer for Windows XP Service Pack 2
(KB834707)) the computer will crash with STOP 0x0000007F when a user logs
off. There were no other hardware or software changes. The computer was
stable prior to the update. The error is reproducible. Because the update
cannot be uninstalled, I am stuck with it until a solution is found.

After checking the "show updates" box, the entry for 834704 did show up.
Uninstalling it caused Windows XP to fail to boot. Safe Mode, Last Known
Good, etc. would not work. No matter what, I got a blue screen with: STOP
C0000221 [BadImageChecksum] The image urlmon.dll is possibly currupt. The
header checksum does not match the computed checksum.

I ended up restoring from a backup (Ghost image). Windows runs OK again
now. I just have to remain vulerable to the bugs fixed by the patch.
Fortunately, I mostly use another browser besides IE.
