IE auto-closing/no favorites

Very odd behavior today that I've never seen before (no updates or parameter
changes in the past 24 hours, and it wasn't happening yesterday.)
1) when I open an IE window, approximately 7 of 10 times today, the window
has automatically closed. I click on the "send error message to Microsoft"
button to help diagnose, but there's no indication what's caused the error.
This has happened when I directly enter into the IE bar a specific website.
Has happened on both regularly-and irregularly-used sites.
2) when I click on one of my "favorites", I get the above-mentioned "IE has
experienced an error; do you wish to send a message to Microsoft message."
In approximately 10 attempts today (all different websites that I've
designated as favorites) I haven't been able to log in once.

I'm running Windows XP SP2, IE 6 SP1 (and went to the Windows Update center
today to make sure I'm not missing anything--they say I'm up to date).

Any suggestions?????
