IE and Secure Web Sites/windows update

I have Win ME (troubled system) networked with Win 98
using a HUB (yes, I know I need to get a router). I
switched to cable internet a couple of months ago. Things
were going "ok" until last Sat. I cannot login to secure
web sites (page cannot be displayed) except for my cable
ISP and I am constantly getting "Internet explorer has
encountered a problem and must shut down". It's driving me
nuts!!!!. I went to microsoft and downloaded IE 6 and
patches, didn't help. I also cannot scan for Windows
updates (page cannot be displayed). I've run the IE6
repair, deleted all temp files and caches. cipher strenght
128. pc time is set correctly. Searched microsoft, no
help. Any ideas?

Check for spyware if no luck.

IE 6.

Try this: Tools > Internet Options > Advanced > Browsing
Uncheck the Enable 3rd party browser extensions

If this clears your problem then find out who the culprit(s) is/are with
these tools.

After spending 6 hours on the phone with mircrosoft, I was
still having the same trouble. Thinking something was
running in the backgroud, I started the process of
elimination. I did ctrl atl del and chose an item, tried
IE, until finally, I did ctrl alt del Navapw32 and bingo,
I'm working again.

Doesn't this mean you disabled your antivirus protection? Anything-Nav
screams Nortons to me.
