IE address bar only accepts fully qualified urls, with "http://"

J

Jason Kochmaruk

For some reason, I can no longer enter short urls into my IE address bar
without including the "http://" prefix. For example, I used to be able to
type "cnn.com" into my address bar and then hit enter, which took me
directly to "http://www.cnn.com". Now, if I type "cnn.com" into my address
bar and then hit enter, it tries to go to "C:\WINNT\Desktop\cnn.com". IE no
longer prepends the "http://" in front of my url, forcing me to do it
manually. Instead it is prepending "C:\WINNT\Desktop\" to my url. Any
ideas how to fix this???

Registry fix.
[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\AutoCo
mplete]
"Append Completion"="no"
"Use AutoComplete"="yes"
"AutoSuggest"="no"

Changing "Append Completion" from "no" to "yes" will restore the function.

Henri,

Wrong fix? Isn't that your Ctrl-Enter repair?

This problem needs Sandi's (misnamed IMO) "Extension" fix.

BTW check your links. It has moved since I last found it.
