IE 7 problems (Windows update, system restore, search, device manag

Ok, here it goes...I installed IE7 but then uninstalled it as I had serious
compatibility issues with McAfee antivirus. But since I uninstalled both
McAfee and IE7, a number of problems have appeared.

1) Windows update no longer works (blank screen)
2) whenever i try to use the search function I get a 'a file that is
required to run Search companion cannot be found' message
3) the device manager doesn't work returning a ' MMC cannot open the file
C:\Windows\system32\devmgmt.msc' message

and god knows what else I haven't spotted yet..

I tried to install some fixes (Windows script etc) and IE7 again hoping to
solve these problems but I am unable to pass the validation stage even though
I have a genuine XP Pro copy and my internet connection works fine !!! The
error I get is Validation Incomplete: Internet Connection Problem
[0x80080293]....I disabled firewalls etc. just in case but problem persists.
What is going on ?

Tried also to restore the system to previous dates, none of them worked..
Spent a whole day googling to find posts with people having a similar
problem, followed suggested solutions, none worked... I was wondering, is MS
aware if these problems ? any fixes out there yet ? Any help would be
appreciated

Please post copies of the Error / Warning Reports as they appear in
System / Application logs in Event Viewer.

You can access Event Viewer by selecting Start, Administrative Tools,
Event Viewer. When researching the meaning of the error, information
regarding Event ID, Source and Description are important.

HOW TO: View and Manage Event Logs in Event Viewer in Windows XP
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;308427&Product=winxp

A tip for posting copies of Error Reports! Run Event Viewer and double
click on the error you want to copy. In the window, which appears is a
button resembling two pages. Double click the button and close Event
Viewer. Now start your message (email) and do a paste into the body of
the message. This will paste the info from the Event Viewer Error
Report. Make sure this is the first paste after exiting from Event
Viewer.

Next time do NOT install software until its been out of BETA for at
least 6 months. Please do NOT be the first ones to test new ware.

Nice theory, however in this instance M$ decided to inflict it on
everyone via the autoupdate mechanism .. maybe you could get them not to
do that until it's been properly tested?

Hi southpaw,

Try reinstalling Windows Script 5.6

Auto update is NEVER recommended by anyone.

Don't be a victim. Take control of your system. Turn off automatic
updates. Why let any program have that control?

Update (this is for future reference, for people who may experience similar
problems)

After almost two days of total frustration I fixed the problem ! For some
reason I lost regsvr32 mshtml.dll, regsvr32 shdocvw.dll -i and regsvr32
shell32.dll -i when I uninstalled IE7 and McAffee. Once I put them back again
(Start-Run), problem was fixed and now Windows update, device manager and the
search function are all working properly again..

Conclusion: As a couple of people already said, disable automatic updates...

Oh and thanks to those who tried to help

It is off on my PC (automatic download, but manual install). Sadly I do
not own all the PCs on the network. I don't even USE IE7, I use Firefox.
None the less IE7 has still managed to screw up 'my network places'
(making local machines look like internet ones) all over the place.

Was it IE7 or McAfee?

If that was addressed to me, and relates to the 'my network places all
screwed up' (note your .sigsep + top posting has managed to hide
everything you quoted when a real/compliant newsreader replies to it),
then yes it is definitely IE7, because you can fix the problem by going
into the 'security' tab on IE7 and manually adding all the computer
names to the exceptions list.

eg \\computer1
\\computer2

etc.

Ticking the 'assume all UNC paths are on the intranet' doesn't work. Is
broken. 'Automatically determine intranet locations' apparently =never=
works, unless you are running AD (not much interest to home users),
although that setting happens to be the default.

I had a comment on the IE7 NG to the effect that 'it is a known
problem'. Yeah, right .. before, or after, they automatically installed
it on several zillion PCs?
