IE 7 playing streaming Audio

W

Wiley C

I posted this issue, 04 Jan 2009, in the IE forum, but there have been no
replies, so I am posting here. I apologize if I have erred in my decision.

Months to years ago, IE would inform me that a streaming audio [ & perhaps
video ] file could be played within IE.

Is is possible to configure IE 7, on Vista SP1 to do this? If so, how? I
looked through IE 7's internet options > advanced tab.

To the best of my knowledge, I have never used IE 7 on a Vista PC to play a
streaming audio or video file.

Thanks for your time.

Do you mean directly within the old Media Bar? That feature was removed
several versions ago. Now your options would be standalone or
embedded-using-some-player playback.

I don't know what you're trying to do and am under lots of time-constraints.
So here's an ugly embedded player page:
http://zachd.com/pss/samples_HTML/allbrowser.htm

You should use Paint to draw a picture of what you're trying to do and then
upload that to flickr or something like that so we can understand you.

I'm pretty certain so far that you're referring to Media Bar functionality
that was removed several versions ago.

Yes, you are correct about the media bar. I apologize for not making it
clear in my previous post.

I copied your link into IE 6 SP1 & FF 3.0.0.5 [ on a Win 2000 Pro SP4 PC].
The page displayed, but when I clicked on the link beneath the player screen,
I was taken to http://server/file.asx, with a notice, in IE, of "The page
cannot be displayed".

I mention the above ONLY as FYI. I am very grateful for the information you
provided.

Thank you, also, very much for the WMP FAQ!

Yeah, it's just a very old sample page that used invalid URLs so people

Standalone is any player running by itself in parallel with the browser.
So: different application windows would be visible onscreen.

Embedded playback would be exactly like that page on my site.

At this point I think I've helped identify the source of your confusion.
Since you're on Windows 2000, your questions aren't really relevant to this
Windows Vista newsgroup, and they're not really anything requiring any level
of technical expertise that I might luckily/hopefully have, so I will salute
you on this fine day and hope you enjoy browsing in a little less confusion.
If you have further questions, I'm sure others could provide excellent
answers. =)

You cannot readily force the stream to play counter to how the site you are
visiting is trying to play it.

I'm not sure what the question is here. The Media Bar was removed a long
while ago. If the site provider wants to embed the playback within their
web page, they can do so. You cannot force it to be embedded into their web
page, sorry.

As previously noted, you have answered my question in terms of the Media
Bar by informing me, and providing a link, that the Media Bar is obsolete.

From your responses, which I appreciate, it is my understanding [ which may
be incorrect ] that if WMP 11 can play streaming media my only choice is to
allow WMP to play said media.

Furthermore, it is my understanding that if I do not want WMP to play the
media, I will need to install a different media player.

Please comment.

I think we are close to closing this thread.

upload that to flickr or something like that so we can understand
you.

I'm pretty certain so far that you're referring to Media Bar
functionality
that was removed several versions ago.

Please give me an example of an embedded player.

Thanks for the information.

Do you mean directly within the old Media Bar? That feature was
removed
several versions ago. Now your options would be standalone or
embedded-using-some-player playback.

I posted this issue, 04 Jan 2009, in the IE forum, but there
have
been
no
replies, so I am posting here. I apologize if I have erred in
my
decision.

Months to years ago, IE would inform me that a streaming audio
[ &
perhaps
video ] file could be played within IE.

Is is possible to configure IE 7, on Vista SP1 to do this? If
so,
how?
I
looked through IE 7's internet options > advanced tab.

To the best of my knowledge, I have never used IE 7 on a Vista
PC
to
play
a
streaming audio or video file.

Thanks for your time.

From your responses, which I appreciate, it is my understanding [ which
may
be incorrect ] that if WMP 11 can play streaming media my only choice is
to
allow WMP to play said media.

That's incorrect in the abstract. Without specific content, a concrete
assessment could not be made as to the validity of that statement.

A more valid statement would be that streaming media can only be played back
via applications that support that type of streaming media.
Furthermore, it is my understanding that if I do not want WMP to play the
media, I will need to install a different media player.

Or don't try to play the media, or etc.

Your questions don't seem to involve anything I have unique expertise again,
and I again respectfully bow out of this conversation. If you have one more
specific and exact question, that might be interesting, but I really dread
the thought of rehashing multimedia browsing fundamentals for no clear and
exact purpose. Respectfully, I just really don't have time for this
abstract discussion: others can readily teach you these things. <3
