IE 6 Upgrade problem SDHELPER.DLL

Hello,
I downloaded IE6 upgrade for my Win '98 machine. Now, when I try to connect to the Internet, I get a message the IExplorer has encountered a problem and must close. That is as far as I can go. When I look at the detail, it lists the MODNAME as SDHELPER.DLL. I am not an expert user by any means, and would appreciate any help that I can get. Thanks!

See if the following will help.

Here is an excerpt from
http://www.crashcomputing.com/brsforum/showmessage.asp?msgID=15736&forumID=BRS+General+Chat

"It is part of Spybot Search and Destroy, and a Google search showed other
people having trouble with it by interfering with programs running, and also
having great trouble removing it. I started the program up and went into
Spybot's Immunize tab and uninstalled the "Browser helper to block bad
downloads."
That fixed it. Thanks for getting me thinking along these lines."

Hope this helps.

OK, thanks Jan, I'll give it a try. Does this mean that it screwed up the download and I will have to download again, or is it just interfering with the software running?

Thanks again

It should not have interfered, but, it may have. If so, I suggest
uninstalling the IE6, then reinstalling it with a clean install. However,
in order to prevent problems with a reinstall, check the information below
to be sure you follow the proper methods of uninstalling and then
reinstalling.

Hi Jan,
Wow, just uninstalling the browser helper did it. To be able to come up with an answer that solved this problem with so little information is impressive. Thank you so much Jan!!!

I'm tempted to ask you a couple of other questions, but I don't know if that is proper etiquette in this forum, plus I don't want to be a pest. So if you don't respond, please know that I am grateful. Have a great day!

You're very welcome. Glad to hear that it worked for you and you're back up
and running properly again. If your questions are related to this
newsgroup, I'll be happy to try to assist you. If I can't, I'm sure someone
here can. :)

Hi Jan,
Maybe I should post this under a seperate subject, but I would like to know if you might have any ideas...Ever since I installed McAffee security suite, my browser hangs up at random times. I've been back and forth with them way too many times, but their focus is on spyware, and I was wondering if you might have any different ideas. I've installed adaware, spybot, and cwshredder and yes, they did find some stuff but my browser still hangs up. That was what prompted me to update explorer, but I'm still getting the same symptoms. I'll be at a web site and the browser just freezes. It can't find any other web sites but my ISP still shows me to be connected. Thanks again for all of your help.

Sorry to be so long in getting back to you, but, here are a couple of things
you might try. As you know that it is not due to any 3rd party fingers at
play on the 'ol ivories, are you getting any error messages after you
shutdown or during the events? If so, please post the exact wording.

Try the information below and see if it will help. Let me know how you do.
:)

Clear the IE cache. I.E./Tools/Options/General/Delete files (and delete
offline content.) It's often recommended that the Temporary Internet Files
(folder) be kept at
40-50 MB. Bigger isn't necessarily better.
If still no joy then have a look at this page for other issues.

Internet Explorer freezes

Hope this will help.

Hey Jan,

Thanks again for your help. I'm not getting any error message so I'll try your other suggestions. I'll let you know what I find but it will probably take me a couple of days to get this done.

Again, I really appreciate the time that you are taking for a Windows/IE dummy.
