IE 6 Toolbar Edit Button sometimes disabled

Hi,

I use the edit button on the IE toolbar for various purposes.

On a copy of IE 6.0.3790 running on W2K3 it is often unavailable.

The symptoms I've identified to date are: It is available on sites on the
local web server, it appears to be unavailable on sites on the open Internet
and on other servers in the local network.

I've checked IE installed on a W2K machine and that works as expected.

I suspect that some security patch has messed up the way IE works on W2K3.

The installation also runs MSN Desktop Search...

Does anyone know what I do (security setting?) to make the edit button work
again.

Hi Mike :)

Try the following and see if it helps:

How to reset IE Toolbar Menu
http://toolbar.google.com/fixmenu
Reset the IE Toolbar layout using the method here:

Automated tools:
http://www.dougknox.com/xp/utils/xp_toolbarfix.htm
http://windowsxp.mvps.org/reg/IEToolbar.reg

also....be sure your system is free of any sucmware....

Dealing with Unwanted Spyware and Parasites:
http://mvps.org/winhelp2002/unwanted.htm
Be aware, your Anti-Virus won't detect all types of warez, Trojans, malware,
worms, etc., and neither can other adware or spyware related programs such
as AdAware and SpyBot. They don't have the proper definitions. They must
also be run in Safe Mode with Hidden Files enabled in order to fully scan
all files. Even if you have run such programs and nothing shows up, it does
not mean your system is clean. It takes a series of programs to fully clean
your machine. Some very aggressive and damaging variants of malware can
replicate themselves repeatedly, or mutate, if not removed properly.

Hope this helps.

I had a look at those articles. They address situations where the toolbar is
missing / corrupted.

This is not my case. The Toolbar is there, the edit button is grayed out
for some sites but appears for others (as described), and it works.

These don't claim to fix that exact situation.

I currently use an enterprise anti-virus / protection system and I use the
monthly (?) MS checker. Your post seems to imply that absolutely nothing
works for spyware etc. I can't afford to be that pessimistic.

If there is a write up on a situation with exactly my symptoms I'd love to
hear about it.

(I'm not ready to take a shotgun approach to the problem.)

I've run some more tests using 5 other sites on the local web server, some
of them also have a greyed out Edit Button. (This is more complex than I
first thought.)

(I've seen other reference to problems that may be the same as mine (detail
is lacking), but no answers to them.)

The problem got worse, I eventually couldn't use View Source.

That helped me identify the issue:

I emptied the browser file cache and it all worked again.

I've used IE since it started, never seen this one before. I guess we all
live and learn.
