Hi, I am having problems getting IE 6 to run, when i click either the
"internet explorer" or my service provider icon IE6 doesnt open up, the
process runs as i can see it in task manager but nothing else happens. Can
anyone help? If i click on a link in something like the security center i can
get to this microsoft site, but if i try and go anywhere else IE6 stops
responding. I have checked my internet connection and thats ok, and my system
is clear of viruses. Please help!!

This may be caused by spyware/malware that's gotten installed on
your system. Use Ad-Aware and/or Spybot Search & Destroy to remove it.

Ad-Aware: http://www.lavasoftusa.com/
Spybot: http://www.safer-networking.org/en/index.html
Good sites on how to install and use Spybot -
http://www.safer-networking.org/en/tutorial/index.html
http://tomcoyote.com/SPYBOT/index1.php

Also download a winsock repair tool, to have just in case cleaning up
anything found breaks it -

Winsock repair tools:
LSPFix- all versions of Windows http://www.cexx.org/lspfix.zip
Winsock2 Fix- Win98, ME
http://www.bu.edu/pcsc/internetaccess/winsock2fix.html
LavaSoft- all versions of Windows-

More information here:

http://inetexplorer.mvps.org/Darnit.htm
http://www.doxdesk.com/parasite/ - runs a little script when loading page to
check for common parasites

If no joy, in IE go to Tools...Internet Options...Advanced tab, Browsing
section, uncheck "Enable third-party browser extensions", click Apply, click
Okay, reboot. If that solves your problem, then more troubleshooting is
needed to find out exactly which program, or Browser Helper Object (BHO) is
causing this problem. You don't want to leave it at that, as some BHOs are
useful or necessary - like Adobe Acrobat for reading .pdf files or an
essential component of Norton AV. Get BHODemon -
http://www.definitivesolutions.com/bhodemon.htm - read all about BHOs.
Disable all items, and then gradually replace one or two at a time to narrow
down the culprit.

Or if you have IE 6 SP-2 you can do this within the browser:
How to manage Internet Explorer add-ons in Windows XP Service Pack 2

If all the above fails, then the problem could be something new that the
spyware cleaners above don't have in their databases yet. In that case....
HijackThis direct download:

Tutorial on how to use HijackThis:

Then post it's output log to the forum here for analysis and feedback by the
parasite experts:

Or the other HijackThis Logs forums listed here:

Or try this program to get some of the most nasty malware:
CWShredder direct download:

Also make sure IE is not opening off your screen:

Hello, I have a very similar issue with IE6 not starting. Everytime I try and
launch IE it appears nothing happens although when looking in task mgr I can
see a process for each time I try to start IE. So if I try and start IE 6
times, I can see 6 x ieexplore.exe processes running, but nothing appears on
the desktop. I.m running XP Sp2 ie sp1 and this issue only started about a
week ago. I've downloaded and am running netcaptor and that works fine (as
this uses the ie settings). I've tried the following:

1. reinstalling IE 6 by editing regisitry and reinstalling.
2. Spybot and CWShredder - nothing found.
3. Varous Winsock fix tools.
4. Edit default ie window placement settings.

I'm also getting a "socket notification error" when exiting Windows after
running
the Winsoxk fix tools.

Any help much appreciated. thanks

Hi,
I have also been having problems with IE 6 (and other applications, like
Windows Media Player not starting up, and other applications too, like
WinDBG).
Is it just IE6 that doesn't open with you ? There have been several post on
IE already; I have tried AdAware and Spybot but these didn't find anything. I
was trying WinDBG, but I don't have much experience with debugging
applications. It's also started these last few days...
I'll continue checking...

hello, yeah the only issue I have is with IE. It's very strange a sit seems
to start as them mouse cursor changes to the hour glass for a few secs, it
then starts the process as I can see it in task manager. Then nothing but the
process remains in task manager. Netcaptor however works fine and it uses the
same settings as IE.

For info I'm running XP SP1 and cannot upgrade to SP2 just yet. I've not
tried everything I can find on various support sites, including reinstalling
IE 6, various adware programs, registry checks/edits, regsvr32 *.dll (listed
DLL for MS support site), SFC /scannow and still get the same problem. I
found this synpton for IE4 and it's exactly whats happening when I launch IE:

"When you attempt to start Internet Explorer, the mouse pointer may change
to the Working In Background or Busy pointer and then back to the normal
pointer, but Internet Explorer may not start."

Other than installing XP2 (can't do yet) or reinstalling Windows does anyone
have any other ideas? thanks

Do you have the latest cumulative security update installed?
If not installing it would have much the same effect
as reinstalling IE (certainly shake up the bits in the registry
more than just a few regsvr32 commands.)

Good luck
