IE 6 fails after SP4 is installed

I have installed Windows 2000 on a new hard drive, followed by a Zone Alarm firewall. My DSL Internet access worked fine even after updating Internet Explorer at Windows Update. I then installed Service Pack 4. After rebooting Explorer no longer accessed the internet, it would not load pages/the connection processs lagged forever and ultimatly failed.

I opened and used the windows Update dialog box that allows one to choose Explorer as the internet access program, with no change in the problem. I uninstalled Service Pack 4 and Explorer/DSL was back to normal. I reinstalled Service Pack 4 and again Explorer failed.

Suggetions??? Should I just abandon any hopes that Service Pack 4 will work for me? Is it really necessary or useful??should I install SP3 instead?

I posted this question in the Windows Update newsgroup and received a response that this was not really an update, but Windows general or setup problem

From a command prompt;
ipconfig /all
and compare the result of before and after SP4 may reveal something.

If it's a new installation, I would recommend wiping it again so you can get
it working properly from the start.

I would recommend the following order of installation:

Windows 2000
Service Pack 4
Zone Alarm
Internet Explorer 6 SP1 (combined installation, not IE6 gold then SP1)
MS04-004 update.
Other hotfixes such as MS03-039, 043 and 049.
Antivirus.

I would use your current system as a means to get hold of everything you
need and burn it to CD. That way you can get the installation done without
connecting to the internet.

Hope this helps

Thanks for the advice. I am currently following it, although I'm not sure about my ability to download sp4 to CD-R....Steve
