Here's two possible solutions.
First, try the following to be sure there area no issue here to cause the
problem.
You can test whether Java is working on your machine at the

If no joy, then continue with the following -
Red X Instead of Images - Can't see or save Images/Pictures
Try clearing the IE cache. I.E./Tools/Options/General/Delete files (and
delete offline content.)

Right click on the graphic you see and a pop up menu should appear. Select
"Show Picture" option.
Then, go to Internet Options>Advanced Tab
Show Pictures - check option if
unchecked to display pictures all the time.

Both Java VM's can co-exist on your machine quite nicely. Just select which
one you want to use in Tools|Internet Options|Advanced and restart all IE

Java VM vendor associated with IE:

A note from Mitch Gallant:
"One note about the JVM Selector utility: If/when you install a new
version of Sun J2SE, you need to manually
select to have Sun JVM as default JVM for IE (in install), or after install
