IE 6 and Taskbar Hang

Hi- Recently my p4/XP Pro machine with IE6 began to hang.
IE 6 will freeze (Not Responding) upon clicking a link,
and the taskbar will freeze, too. Items on the desktop
remain accessable. I can't call up the task manager
with CTRL-ALT-DEL or via right-clicking the taskbar.
The only "way out" is a hard reset.

This problem has persisted through a reformat and clean
install of Win XP. All hotfixes are downloaded, and I'm
definitively virus/malware free.

Any thoughts?

ie6 locks upon clicking a link (sometimes...MOST of the time) the only way out is to end task! The taskbar becomes useless also. I am stumped on this one.. downloaded all the updates... Muysta been those 'windows updates' i did last weekend!

Are you using a proxy? This just recently started happening to me.
I'm using PRIVOXY. If turn off the proxy in internet settings, the
problem goes away.

Wish I had a solution because I am experiencing similar problems. I
have removed Earthlink thinking it was the problem and reinstalled and
have been diligent about updating (maybe that could lead to some of
the problems!). But, usually when I a clicking on a link, the system
freezes. I cannot get Alt/Ctrl/Del to get the Task Manager to
show--truthfully I haven't sat around for ten minutes waiting either.

Specifically, where do I find that setting? I have looked at IE's
Internet Options.

If you didn't enable it, it's doubtful that it's "on".

From the browser "tools", select "internet options", "connections".
If you use DSL or dialup, select "settings" otherwise "lan settings".
There will be a check box for enabling a proxy.
