IE 6.0 starts explorer.exe (not iexplorer)

Hi,

my IE 6.0 drives me crazy - klicking on the taskbar icons of IE 6.0
(same with outlook express)
doesn't start the desired application - instead in both cases the
"normal" file explorer opens.

Properties of icons are ok - (IE 6.0 -> iexplore.exe; Outlook express
-> MSIMN.exe).

Internet connection is ok, Mozilla and Thunderbird are running ok (and
they where peaceful coexisting for month with IE and OE).

OS is Windows2000, SP4

Any ideas ? (Reinstalling OS was not the solution....)

Sorry, this probably will not help, but I never liked those taskbar starts
and set that to not display. Can you start the correct programs from the
Start->Programs menu?

Try this, to see what happens.
Select Start, then RUN, then type in

IEXPLORE <Enter-key>

Does your I.E. browser start ok?

It's just the same effect - regardless off using taskbar icon or
starting directly via run menue or via filemanager - iexplore.exe
brings up the normal explorer (explorer.exe). And this ist was the
taskmanager tells, process runing ist explorer.exe.
