Identities or Multiple e-mail accounts

Good explanation! Maybe you can help me with my problem. It is somewhat
related. I have a new computer and have set up two users. I was able to
import email accounts, messages etc. with everything working fine for one
user but have been having problems with the other user. I will get things set
up and working for the other user, all messages, accounts, contacts etc
imported then come back the next day and everything is gone or the server
name in the accounts has changed and today I get this message when I click in
Inbox (none of the other folders show up anymore):

Folder could not be displayed
Windows Mail could not open this folder.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Possible causes are:
Low disk space.
Low memory.

Any suggestions?

It might be a security program blocking the Registry changes it needs to
make. A few, but not all, of the programs now doing this are:
Ad-aware's Ad-Watch
IBM Access Connections
McAfee VirusScan and/or Antispyware
Norton AV
Spyware Blaster
Spybot> Tools> IE Tweaks
Spybot- Teatimer
Spysweeper
Spyware Doctor
Windows Defender
Zone Alarm (free) 6.5 Reported to be fixed in later versions.

In the case of Zone Alarm 6.5 or Norton 2007 it actually has to be
uninstalled. Make sure the Windows Firewall is turned on until you
reinstall Zone Alarm.

Boot into Safe Mode with Networking and try the change.

Your email provider (who is it?) should have instructions for setting up
Windows Mail.

Check with the provider of your email address.. They probably have a help
webpage with the proper settings.

I just purchased a new PC with Windows Vista and I can't get both mine and my
daughter's e-mail addresses to be identitied in Windows Mail. I created User
Accounts for each of us in Vista, created the accounts under Windows
Mail/Tools but when I click on File and Identities to switch Identities, I go
to a wizard to import the identities and any of the options that I choose
tells me that all identities have been either imported or deleted and then I
can't complete the Wizard. Please help!!!!

I was able to follow those instructions and now can receive email from
accounts other than my default. Now how do I send from that account?

Start composing a new email. Check to see what is displayed on the
'From' line. If that is not the identity you want, click on it, and you can
select from the non-default account identities.

The new Windows Live Mail automates that process.

how do you determine 32 or 64 bit

Hi Susan,

Windows Mail does not have the Identities feature. This program called
"WMIDs" will add the feature to Windows Mail if you want it. It costs
$14.95.

http://www.oehelp.com/WMIDs/Default.aspx

OR

You could switch to Windows Live Mail Beta 2 (WLM) for free. It
supports Pop3, IMAP, HTTP website (EX: Hotmail) email, and is a lot more
stable. Plus, WLM will minimize to a tray bar icon and
_has_a_separate_Inbox_for_each_account_. WLM will automatically import
Windows Mail messages, accounts, and settings into it. _Contacts_ will
have to be manually imported from within WLM. (Tools, Contacts, File,
Import, Address book for current Windows User.) To see the _Menu_bar_,
press ALT+M and check "Show all menus".

For US and UK (32 bit Vista):

For US and UK (64 bit Vista):
'Windows Live Beta 2 Suite Downloads'

For non-US and non-UK locations (direct download):

Hope this helps,
Shawn

Windows Mail doesn't have identities. It can use several email accounts
but it puts the incoming email for all of them in the same Inbox.

This thread is so comical - thank you all for a good laugh. One must laugh
when frustrated. It's all easy to those who know what they're doing. But
many of us who normally find things intuitive are having problems getting
more than one email address (that used to be identities in OE) to work in
this Vista mail program. I'm personally grateful to those of you who are
trying help us who aren't familiar with Vista or the new mail program. We
miss OE, but really need help setting up this new program.

So - I have successfully set up my basic email account (which I don't check
too often, as I use my work email more, but it's how earthlink knows the
account by), but my husband's identity account can't seem to work. I tried
setting it up as a separate account, and it shows on the list, but when I try
to send an email to that account (from my own laptop to this computer),
nothing happens.

Again, bless all you who listen to us frustrated users and still try to help
us! I'm lost and would do anything (almost) to get this done. (I've just
spent the last two full days trying to fix Internet connection from this new
desktop computer only to find that McAfee isn't well received by Vista -
deleting that program fixed my Internet connection - what a waste of my time).

Your husband's email provider (who is probably also his internet
provider) should have instructions for setting up to use their email
servers. If they haven't written instructions for Windows Mail yet,
use their instructions for Outlook Express but under Windows Mail
instead. The instructions are probably somewhereon their web site.
Or, you could tell us who your husband's email provider is and see
if anyone here already knows where to find the instructions.

You might also check if mail to your husband's account goes to your
basic account instead.

There may be a way to have vista and e-mail. If you still need to have
multiple accounts, the easy way to do it is not to use windows mail at all,
but use Outlook Express. Go to the microsoft website and download Outlook
Express. install it on your vista machine, set up your e-mail accounts as
before. This may or may not work, but it should. If you're as impressed
with vista as I am, this is a viable solution to having multiple accounts.
This is the simple way to do it. Help file on vista is less than helpfull
about everything. Don't rely on the help files. Of course, there may be one
more built-problem. A good number of software programs that I've tried to
transfer to vista are not compatible. If Outlook Express is not
compatible......

Outlook Express won't run under Vista.

Windows Mail allows you to have more than one email account, but puts
the incoming mail from all of them into one Inbox. It doesn't do much
with identities.

If you want a separate set of folders for each email account, you might try
Windows Live Mail, which does this:
