Ideal page width

U

Uncle Joe

I'm ready to start designing a template for my web blogs.

Have noticed earlier comments specifying page widths of 720,
750, and 760 pixels. This makes me wonder which size would
be ideal for my new site. I'd like to maximize screen real
estate without causing readers to scroll horizontally.

Your advice would be appreciated. Thanks you.

Suggest that you look for a pre-built blog application, then based on what you decide meets your
needs, then you will be able to determine what type of web host you need.

Thanks, Tom. I have a concrete idea of how I'd like to create/run
my blog, but the devil is in the details. Never had to manage a
database before. From what I gather, FP2003 won't let me
design and test my database until I load the entire web to a
host. When I click on Insert > Database, the database
entry is grayed out.

Don't want to acquire another hosting service until I reclaim
my domain name, which was highjacked by a registrar in
California. Have filed an appeal with Icann.

Databasing is the part that bothers me the most. So many choices.
Access DB seems to be an old technology. Don't yet know the
difference between SQL, IIs, and MySQL. I hate to spend
significant time studying SQL when MySQL might be the
better choice.

Downloaded free blog software known as Ikonboard this
AM, but all the components in its.zip file are types such cgi
and tar. And it doesn't allow me to modify the look ' feel
of the blog board. Don't have a clue how to load, or to
test it locally.

Will follow your advice and continue examining Blogs. Nothing
I've seen thus far excited me. This could result in a great
learning experience. I'm going to buy a book titled "PHP
and MySQL.

In order to write your own database driven application, especially a interactive type application,
you will need to have a good knowledge of a server-side scripting language, because you will need to
write a lot of custom code to allow for user management and content management, etc.
