IDE and SATA drives

Hi all,

Does anyone know what a computer with an EIDE drive running XP is bootable
untile a SATA drive is installed, then the machine will no longer boot? We
have gone into the BIOS to select the EIDE drive as the first bootable device
but the problem persists. When we remove the SATA drive it's bootable again.

Can't we use both drives? The EIDE for the system and boot partitions, and
the SATA for a backup drive?

Thanks for the help.

The EIDE drive is assigned C:\ and was fully functional. The other drive was
not assigned a leter because when it is connected the computer ismn't
bootable.

Hi ... You should be able to use both drives , If you are using the EIDE
drive as your OS drive boot ? Then make sure the jumper is set as master ,
Also in the bios setting area , You have 2 area to set , One is the first
boot devise and then you also need to set the boot priority , The boot
priority is where you set as to which drive to use first , have you done
that ?

wosullly:
1. We'll assume the SATA HDD is non-defective, but have you checked it out
with the diagnostic utility available from the manufacturer of the drive?
(In some instances a motherboard will balk at booting when a defective HDD -
even when it's a non-bootable, secondary HDD - is connected. Interestingly
enough we've run into a similar unable-to-boot problem when a defective
optical drive is connected.)

2. Assuming the SATA HDD is non-defective, have you tried connecting it to a
different SATA connector on the motherboard?

3. Have you tried a different data cable for the SATA HDD?

4. Just for testing purposes - what happens when you boot to the XP
installation CD with only the SATA HDD connected? Any disk recognition
problem?

I just installed a SATA drive into my main workstation yesterday as a
replacement for an IDE data drive. It had 3 IDE drives and one went
bad. I had to enable SATA in the BIOS (I believe there was also an
option for it being a boot drive). You need to check all the settings
in the Integrated Peripherals section (if your BIOS has it). I'm sure
the answer lies in the BIOS.

I had a similar problem with a client who wanted an old IDE drive put in
his new machine that had a single SATA drive. When I installed it, the
machine would not boot. Checking the BIOS, IDE took priority booting
over SATA so I had to change the configuration to boot on the SATA
drive, which is the opposite of your issue.

Terry is quite probably right - the answer is in the BIOS.
When you select the EIDE drive as the first bootable device,
are you de-selecting SATA drives, that is, does the BIOS
consider "EIDE" to be "not SATA"? Some BIOSes (the
Phoenix Technologies BIOS in my Dell, for instance), distinguish
between the Device Type boot order and the Hard Drive
boot order. The latter prioritizes just the hard drives for
receiving control at boot time. It's possible that the SATA HDs
have highest priority by default, and when you put in a SATA
HD, the BIOS passes control to that HD's MBR, ignoring
the PATA HD(s). See if you can adjust the HD boot order
in your BIOS so that PATA HDs have highest priority.

Its your boot priority setting that you need to correct in the bios

Many MOBOs these days allow for selection of boot device at start-up
from a menu. Asus does for one, by pressing F8 at boot time.

I use XOSL, which though not being developed any longer, is one of
the best boot managers I have ever used.

I should update it!

The Device Type from which to boot is not the problem,
it's which Hard Drive to pass control. On many BIOSes,
the former is called "Boot Device", e.g. floppy or CD or
HD. The latter is called "Hard Drive Boot Order" or
something similar, i.e. the prioritized list of hard drives with
the HD at the head of the list being given control, and
being referred to by boot.ini as "rdisk(0)".

Thank you all for such excellent suggestions: you were correct, and I had to
configure the BIOS for both the first boot device and the boot priority.
Every time I put the SATA drive in the priority changed.

Thanks again, and I owe you all some coffee.

Here is the other reason why I could not bood with the four PATA devices and
a SATA drive now that I am booting off SATA, asd I changed the config: A BIOS
update for the problem is available.

0803 2007/01/18 update

Description K8V-VM Ultra BIOS 0803
Revised VBIOS to support 1440*900 resolution.
Fixed the issue that the lan card does not get correct IP address from PCIE
1X lan when installed in 1X slot.
Fixed the issue that when plugging 4 PATA devices, SATA HDD can not boot to
OS.
Added VIA patch for onboard VGA driver loss issue.
