IDE #0 ERROR

My computer crashed. When I tried to restart it I got IDE
#0 ERROR. At one time I got a prompt to try to start it in
the Last KNown Configuration that worked. It said I was
missing <windows root>/system32/hal.dll. Then it quit. Now
all I get is IDE #0 ERROR. Then PXE-E61:media test
failure, check cable then PXE-M0F: exiting Intel Boot
Agent. My system recovery disk gives me the option of
reformatting my drive or nothing. Is there anything I can
do short of losing everything on my hard drive by re-
installing?

The PXE errors are most likely coming from your NIC driver. You can disable
that. As for the IDE errors, I would try booting the machine from your XP
CD and see if you can get into recovery console, if you cant then you have a
bad drive/hardware.
