ICS with XP Pro with linksys Router and Cable Modem

Good Morning,
I have a home network with Windows XP Pro running on several machines.
Somehow, I have managed to "install" ICS. Obviously, my preference
would be to have the Linksys Router control DHCP and the Internet
connection sharing. It was designed for this purpose. I have read many
posts here about NOT being able to uninstall ICS in XP Pro.

My question is, how do I reconfigure my network so that ICS is not
active and that each machine uses the linksys router as the gateway to
the internet and as the DHCP server?

Yes, if you already have a router, you don't need ICS. disable the ICS on
the XP and make it as a workstation obtaining IP from the router.

ICS can't be installed or un-installed -- it can only be enabled or
disabled on a network connection.

What tells you that you've managed to "install" ICS?

If ICS is enabled, one of your network connections will be marked as
"Shared" when you click View | Details in the Network Connections
folder.

If you're seeing an "Internet Gateway", it represents your router, not
ICS. Clicking the Internet Gateway lets you monitor and control the
router's operation.

Is your Internet access working OK?

What gives the impression that I installed ICS was the Icon for
Internet Connection sharing appearing on several computers as enabled
in the view connections. I am reasonably sure this Icon was not
present until I recently installed my new 5MB DOCSIS modem. When I
swapped my 2MB Terayon out and replaced with the Toshiba DOCSIS, I
lost all internet connection. Here is where I went wrong. I ran the
Network wizard. Now ICS appears on all machines. Now that didn't
bother me until I noticed that my Internet speed didn't seem
outstanding. I unhooked my "main" unit (it's the main unit becuase it
runs the software firewall and it is the registered MAC with the ISP)
and plugged the Cable modem directly in. WHAMO! Blazing speed. 4.9MB
down... 750 Up. Tried the entire routine to plug the router back in
the loop and I cannot get on the internet without ICS being enabled. I
don't want ICS enabled. My understanding is that ICS acts as a DHCP
server, so does my Linksys router and then I belive the DOCSIS modem
acts as one as well. That's not good. When the modem is plugged into
the WAN port on my router it should not create a problem being a DHCP
server. However, having the router and ICS acting as DHCP servers on
the same network is an issue. I have run Iconfig /release on the "main
unit". I have rerun the wizard on the main unit but nothing seems to
PERMANENTLY disable ICS. AS soon as I introduce the Router to the main
Unit the ICS Icon appears and activates itself.
Any help would be greatly appreciated, I am extremely frustrated.
Thanks.

There's no such thing as an icon for Internet Connection Sharing.

If you don't see a "Shared" indication on a network connection on one
of the computers, ICS is not installed, enabled, or active in any way.

If you see an "Internet Gateway" on several computers, it comes from
your Linksys router, not from ICS. The icon represents your Linksys
router. Clicking it lets you monitor and control the operation of
your Linksys router. If you don't want it, connect to the router's
built-in web server and disable "Universal Plug and Play".

What IP addresses do your computers have? The default for a Linksys
router is 192.168.1.x. ICS always assigns 192.168.0.x.

Is the network connection on each computer reporting a speed of 4.9
MB? If so, that's the maximum rated speed of the connection, but I've
never heard of a cable modem service that actually transfers data that
fast. To measure the actual transfer speed through a direct cable
modem connection and through the router, go to one of these web pages:

I am attempting a VPN using LinkSys VPN Router and a Windows XP IPSEC client. Got finally connected with XP using Virtual Private Network to login and allowing Incoming. When all configuration issues solved (Nortion Firewall and VPN configuration errors), Client showed up here AND Internet Gateway / Internet Connection icons showed up for first time on BOTH machines at each end of VPN. At same time, Client XP end lost external internet connection. When I disabled the Internet Connection, the VPN disconnected. It looks a lot like ICS is trying to take over. Note both systems on Local Linksys networks (The VPN Router end on different private network from client end (192.168.1.x and 192.168.2.x)) Both ends have Linksys NAT routers to ISP. Disabled both Norton Internet Security systems to see if they were blocking Workgroup. Neither system can see files or systems on other (the intent of the VPN). Shure looks like ICS or XP Firewall "HELPING" us with stuff already provied by LinkSys.
