ICS with WRT54GS and crossover cable...

Hello all,

I have been happily using a crossover cable to share my XP machine's
broadband with a linux box for years. However, I recently bought a
Linksys WRT54GS and I've hit some trouble. My setup is like this:

WAN/Internet --- WRT54GS (192.168.1.1) ---- XP (192.168.1.1xx)

The XP box is handed a 192.168.1.xxx address by tthe DHCP server on
the router. Access is via Linksys USB Wireless Adapter. This
connection is 'shared' using ICS. I then have the 'LAN' side
statically configured. The XP box's NIC is statically set to
192.168.0.1 and on the far side of the crossover cable, my linux box'
NIC is 192.168.0.68 with a default GW of 192.168.0.1:

XP (192.168.0.1) --- Linux (192.168.0.68)

This basic setup has worked happily for years but now, although I can
telnet to the Linux box from XP and even though the XP box has full
network access, the linux box can't see the internet any more. I can't
nslookup, telnet past XP or anything else. The LAN connection on the
crossover is fine, as is that between the PC and the router but there
is no longer any routing happening between these networks (I assume
this is what ICS does under the covers normally).

Does anyone know - do I need to add any rules to the router tables on
the WRT54GS or setup any NAT? I assume ICS does some form of NAT or IP
tunneling but I'm not sure why it should have stopped working. Also
finding it hard to log any traffic - this is always a problem on
Windows but I'm surprised it isn't easier for me to capture packets at
the WRT54GS and see what the hell is going on..!

Anyway, any tips gratefully received...

From what you've described, your setup should work. What did you use
before yo got the Linksys? I've had some problems with USB NICs in the
past, so I wouldn't rule that out. Have you tried disabling and
re-enabling ICS? Also, make sure your subnet masks don't overlap
(255.255.255.0 on both should be fine). Make sure the Linux box is using
192.168.0.1 as it's gateway and your ISP's DNS server.

Please do an ipconfig /all on the XP box and post the results. Also an
ifconfig on the linux box and post.

thanks,
