ICS home networking - Kevin

Mohd Takach

Hi all,
I am a new user and am trying to set up my home network with ICS.
I have a LAN internet connection ip address100.90.80.80 with broadband
connection to access the internet account. Proxy is et to 166.166.55.1 on
the WEB explorer connections.

I would like to use one desktop as my gateway to my home LAN with two
adapter cards:
1) One card to the Internet LAN with the IP address 100.90.80.80
2) One card to the home LAN with IP address that I can change.. I chose
static IP address 192.168.0.1

I intend to connect 2 more desktops to this home LAN with static IP address
that I set to 192.168.0.2 and 192.168.0.3.
I tried lot of setup configurations with no success.

Can anyone help me with a test case which I can use as an example.

I am desperate to make this home LAN with internet sharing to work.

Kind Regards
Kevin

Kevin,

You may have to change your specs just slightly, but I can't see why you
couldn't use ICS.

Here are a few websites with useful tutorials:

192.168.0.1 is the only host IP address that ICS supports. I've
written a web page that should help you get everything working:

Windows XP Internet Connection Sharing
http://www.practicallynetworked.com/sharing/xp_ics

I recommend using dynamic IP addresses on the other computers. If you
use static IP addresses, make all of these settings:

IP Address: 192.168.0.x (1<x<255)
Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0
Default Gateway: 192.168.0.1
DNS Server = 192.168.0.1 or your ISP's DNS server

Ah, Steve, so you wrote that PracticallyNetworked guide! It was helpful,
but please see my post today titled "ICS questions and confusion". I would
like your comments. Thanks.

David, Norman Miller's reply to your "ICS questions and confusion"
message has all the answers for you. He did a good job of sorting
everything out.

I'll just make some brief points here:

1. Enable Internet Connection Sharing, by checking the box "Allow
other network users to connect . . ." on your Internet connection.
That's the one that connects directly to the Internet, usually through
a dial-up, DSL, or cable modem.

2. The connection to the other computers is called the "LAN", "home
network", or "private network" connection.

3. ICS uses 192.168.0.x addresses for the LAN. The Internet
connection must use a different set of addresses.

4. The client computers should normally be configured to obtain an IP
address automatically. The host computer runs a rudimentary DHCP
server to assign IP addresses to the clients. If you're running a
server of some type (web, FTP, game, etc) on a client computer, you
must assign a static IP address to that client so that you'll know its
IP address when you open a hole in the host's firewall.

Yes, but that's not clear from the wording of the dialog boxes
themselves. Most of the guides, including yours, say this and that's
helpful.
2. The connection to the other computers is called the "LAN", "home
network", or "private network" connection.

What if I had one "internet connection" and two or three other LAN
adapters in my computer? ICS tells me that my "LAN Adapter" (singular)
will be set to address 192.168.0.1..... I might have several!
3. ICS uses 192.168.0.x addresses for the LAN. The Internet
connection must use a different set of addresses.

Yes, I know that NOW, from this newsgroup, but this is formally
documented *nowhere*.

If your computer has multiple LAN adapters, there's a drop-down menu
which asks you to specify which one to use for the home (private)
network, as I show here:

Yes, I know that NOW, from this newsgroup, but this is formally
documented *nowhere*.

You have to dig to find that in the documentation -- the Network Setup
Wizard and the network connection properties don't have the
information.

It's documented in the Help and Support topics "Internet Connection
Sharing settings" and "Using DHCP with Internet Connection Sharing",
and in these Microsoft Knowledge Base articles:

How to configure Internet Connection Sharing in Windows XP
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;306126

Troubleshooting Internet Connection Sharing in Windows XP

Thanks.
