ICS DNS

I'm running ICS on XP SP2. Everything seems to be working except DNS on the
internal interface. No DNS queries are able to be requested on the
interface. I did an nslookup on a client and this is what I get.
Default Server: [192.168.0.1}
Address: 192.168.0.1
DNS request timed out
timeout was 2 seconds.
DNS request timed out
timeout was 2 seconds
*** Request to [192.168.0.1] time-out

I've verfied that DNS works on the box running ICS and if I manually change
the DNS to use an outside server on the client everything works. I even
tried installing a third party DNS server on the box and it said that DNS was
already running on port 53. For testing I disabled the firewall and that
didn't solve the problem either.

Disable and then enable ICS on box running ICS. Then disable and
enable the client's LAN connection.

If that doesn't get DNS working via 192.168.0.1 on the client,
manually configure the client to use your ISP's DNS server.

I have already disabled and reinstalled ICS to no avail.

I have a number of users that move between offices so setting DNS manually
is not a good option.

You're welcome.

What firewall does the ICS box have? Some firewalls, such as free
ZoneAlarm, are incompatible with ICS and would have to be
un-installed, not just disabled.

Is there any other networking software running on the ICS box that
might interfere with DNS?

If you have a broadband Internet connection, I recommend using an
inexpensive broadband router to share the connection instead of ICS.

Thanks for the quick reply.

The firewall is just the standard Windows XP firewall. I've turned it off
to check and see if it is the problem.

The DNS was working until the computer had to be shutdown over the weekend.
No software was installed. I would reinstall Windows, but it has been
deployed to a remote site. I have even done an nslookup from the ICS box and
when I change the server to it's internal interface I get the same dns
errors.

The issue with moving to a router is that it is a Verizon cell-based
broadband PCMCIA card so I can't change to a router based solution.

Thanks for the details, Warren. I'm sorry, but I don't know what the
problem is. I just enabled ICS on my Sprint cell-based broadband
PCMCIA card, and everything works normally on the client. I had the
Windows firewall enabled on the host but had to un-check "Don't allow
exceptions".

Are there any relevant messages in Event Viewer on either computer?

No messages in the event viewer on either machine. I'm pretty much stumped
and wondering if a reinstall of Windows is the easiest step.
