I don't know why, but a lot of my icons are messed up and
have disappeared. For all video files, instead of having
a media player icon, I have this wierd icon. Where can I
change the icons for certain files (ie - .mpg).

first of all i'd open media player and re associate all media files

i did that but it didnt do anything. also, there are
other icons for other files that are messed up. isnt
there a place in control panel or something where i can
fix this?

You can try fixing this using the Repair feature in TweakUI. If that
does not work (or if it works only temporarily), you could use the
free ActivIcons utility to increase the size of the system icon cache
- http://www.cursorarts.com/ca_ai.html

To do this in ActivIcons, go to its "Desktop Controls" screen and
increase the icon cache size to 4096. After that, have it rebuild the
icon cache. The options for rebuilding the cache are on 2 small round
buttons at the lower/right corner. Shut down any programs running in
the background, then click the round button farthest to the
lower/right corner (your system will reboot, and the icon cache will
be purged of old and corrupted icons).
