icons, sound, fonts disappear- windows running out of something? :(

Sergei Shelukhin

Hi.
Can someone please help me with the following problem? Recently,
Windows XP Pro install that used to be very stable started
experiencing problems - as some time (15mins-2hours on average) passes
after boot, many icons start to disappear or change to generic
versions randomly everywhere, sound refuses to play (Winamp tells me
there's no sound device), fonts change to generic here and there,
programs fail to start w/ various messages ("Cannot create empty
document" for mmc, "Out of system resources" for WIndows Commander
etc).
It looks like WIndows is running out of some handles, but handles
level is relatively low as seen in Process Explorer, so is thread
count.

If you kill any process in Process Explorer, the problem is removed
for a couple more minutes (depends on process) but then it reappears
again.

I have checked the PC with Sophos Antivirus, Sophos Antirootkit,
ClamWin Antivirus, Spybot S&D and AdAware in safe mode and during
normal operation - there are no viruses or malware, full checkdisk
scan on system disk shows no errors too, services and startup lists
and HijackThis dump show nothing suspicious too.

What can cause this problem? Can someone please help?

Hey,Sergei
I had the same probelm around 5-8-2007 turns out It's a bug or virus go to
microsofts update page, find windows Live-one scaner and use the protection
part of the scaner it will take an 1.5 to 2hrs to run but it will fix it, or
tell you how to locate the exact file it is in. I had to throw that file out
twice on my computer acouple of days apart from each other. Good luck!

I have the same issue and have tried onecare.live.com scanner and still have the problem. No sound, font changed, no access to Firewall (service disabled).

What file did cause this incident?
