Icons sent to desktop do not work

I am using Windows XP 2nd edition. When I send any files or programs to
desktop using either "send to" or by copy and paste, the shortcut icons
appear on my desktop but when I click on them, a window pops up stating that
the file or program cannot be found. I am at a lost as to why this is
happening. (corrupt windows???)
Any help or suggestions will be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

You need to right-click on the item and select:
Send To > Desktop (create shortcut).

I have done exactly that....the icon is placed on the desktop but when I
click on it, a window pops up stating that it cannot find what I placed on
the desktop.
