Icons in Vista

All the cool icons I find on the internet seem to be in the .png form and
supposedly work with/on MS systems. But whenever I try to associate one of
these .png icons with a program or file the system refuses to let me. Is
there some setting in Vista that I need to set in order to use these icons??

Icons have a *.ico extension not a *.png. Convert to *.ico and then you can use
them

That is a useless link and a moot point at this stage where the OP needs the icon to
work with a program

To use the icon associated with a program as the OP desires then he needs it to be
in the *.ico extension otherwise the icon he downloads will not work.

So I think I am understanding that I can't just rename the free .png icons
that I have downloaded to .ico. I have to actually run them through an
external (non MS) converter program first. Is that about the size of it.??

Bob, I get the impression that you are saying the same as Peter seems to be
saying. That is, I can't just rename the .png icons to .ico; they have to
be "converted" first. So the problem isn't with MS or with Vista, per se -
right?

Yes, that's how it looks to me.
